Does anyone know a brand that makes a compass with a decent amount of rigidity? I have two Staedtlers and it seems like if I apply anything other than a dainty touch the radius changes.

There is no brand that makes good compasses anymore, the field has been computerized ages since. Get an old professional compass from ebay.
