Is this guy for real?I'll never understand the subject matter, so I need someone else to tell me.
>>16923472No idea. There are several Japanese mathematicians who have done really brilliant things, pushing the field further, but they also tend to rub a lot of people the wrong way with how they behave.
>>16923472He's real. A lot of mathematicians don't believe him because white male math jesus (scholze) declared him to be a heretic.
>>16923472I actually know something. The truth is that the jury is out but it's clear that he's not completely crazy, that he has real ideas but might have lost the plot at some point, and like >>16923503basically he's now an outcast because St. Peter declared him to be a anathema. The reasons Scholze-Stix give in their "report" are borderline ad-hominem (but then again so are Mochizuki's replies). There is a chance that Scholze might not have understood all the fine points of Mochizuki's work, since he only spent a week on it. I, personally, think that Mochizuki's work is wrong, but contains potentially useful ideas. At least more useful than Condensed Mathematics.
