Pons was scamming people and abusing his position at the university. Lots of scientists were mad at him for that. Epstein, if anything, probably just helped organize extra harassment to make him give up.

If you cant even replicate the results in a lab, making it into an industrially viable product is even less likely.
Solar and wind and SMRs are more than sufficient to reduce oil dependency. For storage you could do electricity->methane and reuse natural gas infrastructure.
