>yeah looks good, but lets make the front wheel 10 times as big as the other one
were they fucking retarded?
>>
It was a time when children could walk up to a soda counter and order a drink with cocaine in it. They weren't in their right minds.

penny-fathings are based af.
without a chain, cassettes of gears, and derailleurs, the amount of torque needed to turn the big wheel was well matched with the range of motion and force a person could apply with their legs to the pedals. the little wheel is there just for helping a person to balance.
it's a perfectly practical design with minimum complexity.
truth be told, most people are dumber today than they have been in the last 300 years. being able to operate a smartphone doesn't make you intelligent, and in fact, study after study shows it encourages the exact opposite.
>>
They made women really horny. Big wheel = big penis.

This was the only time bikes were cool. I thought they were gay fag shit too until i really learned about them
>>

>Why did people think this was a good idea?
Because they barely had to pedal to go twice as far twice as fast as the alternatives at the time, so it was less energy expense for greater returns which made it much more economical.

It was a better time when you never had to travel more than 4 city blocks (well maintained, free of minorities) for daily necessities.

From the OP image the brake is clearly attached to the rear wheel. Obviously they help balance, but also it seems like it allows you to brake without faceplanting forward 8 feet into the pavement.

That brake looks like it's a modern addition.

Gays hit the leather bike scene after they stopped making them.

The brake is obvious later addition. Original models either had no brakes (like pic related) or a spoon brake on the front wheel just below the handle bar. They don't really "need" brakes since the pedals are directly attached to the wheels, you brake by pedaling slower. It's bit like how when you go downhill with a car you engine brake vs hitting the clutch and letting it go down freely.

It is imprtant to understand the context of any invention or development. The Penny Farthing was designed at a time when roads were paved with large, often uneven cobble stones and the large wheel evened out the bumps.
>>
Only found propaganda on a search for black people riding a penny-farthing bicycle
>>
Because,
a, bicycle chain wasn't invented yet, so if you have large wheel you don't need to pedal as fast
b, synthetic rubber wasn't a thing yet, so the wheels were just solid metal or wood. large wheel, more pleasant to drive around

the old ones absolutely had handbrakes, you can see videos of them on youtube
>>
>>16924753
How do you know it isn't a good idea given the mechanics of this thing?
>>
>>16924986
You can see the handbrake here
>>16924950
It goes into the spoon brake on the front wheel.

thnks

Looks like a little seating area for them. Now we know why masters were comically seated upright.
>>

this plus no chains as such. little wheels feel every rut and bump in the road. chad big wheels just keep on turnin'
