If humans actually become immortal, wouldnt human evolution stop? It would be immortal apes stuck with the same hardware of thousands of years ago
>>16931240>It would be immortal apes stuck with the same hardware of thousands of years agoExcept for the immortality upgrade and any other artificial hardware upgrades.
>>16931243true, but there wouldnt be any mutations or genetic changes being passed on to next generations. It would be the same apes but just immortal.
>>16931244a) why change if you dont need to?b) we can change genetically, we'd just do it while we are alive
>>16931240don't worry, it won't become a problem
If my grandma had wheels, she would be a bicycle.
>Immortality range>this is literally existingSpiritually? fqn banger 'me f'rrrr
>>16931240>If humans actually become immortal, wouldnt human evolution stop?If by 'evolution' you mean natural mutation and selection, that stopped thousands of years ago. Humanity as you know it is a product of evolution driven by natural mutation and artificial selection. The next stage would be evolution by artificial mutation and selection. Engineered "humans". You might object that engineering is at odds with evolution, but the history of technology says otherwise. Instead of a naturally evolving humanity, there would be various casts of biotechnologically evolving of post(read: sub)humans.
>>16931240If we are able to achieve immortality I'm sure we will be able to change our DNA too and make all the genetic changes we need.
>>16931315>we ... our DNA ... the genetic changes we need. You mean they will make whatever changes they need to their DNA. You will own nothing, least of all "your" DNA. You will be their product. Though when I say 'you', I don't mean literally you, since you're obviously on their cull list. I mean everyone in the future equivalent of your wagedrone/consoomer social class.
what about adaptations your body makes to its environment? like how you can apparently look at the shoulders of etruscans and see which ones were archers or whatever
evolution stopped and then reversed when we started feeding the least fit people allowing them to outbreed the most fit
>>16931323>feeding the least fit peopleYou mean the dysgenic products of civilization in general, or specifically the urban white collar golems who can't feed themselves?
>>16931240I'll think that the humans will be evolving towards adaptations to make them more comfortable within their environment
>>16931240Great Basin bristlecone pines are immortal and they still evolve. As long a s you have kids people will evolve
>>16931240Depends on what you mean, truly natural selection stopped for humans something like 100k years ago and has been replaced by more and more directed change by humans. Even immortal humans would inevitably change in some manner over time be it with them changing themselves deliberately by accident or by shifts in the average as new humans are added.Really for any living thing to be even pseudo immortal the hardware has to be changed in major ways, there's no such thing as "one simple trick" that makes something live ten or hundred times it's normal lifespam. You need to do radical revision and maybe even abandon flesh for metal and plastics.
>>16931240Any technology with that level of control on our biology would not just give us a very long life but also the ability to modify it.Evolution could actually become faster.
>>16931359What do you think would happen if some day the rich can become superhuman and live hundreds of years or modify their DNA to be stronger, faster, etc.?Imagine a dictator that becomes superhuman. I guess he could still be killed but what if he have a personal guard of superhumans too... Basically we would live in the X-Men world. The technology to become superhuman would need to be controlled by the rich too so there are few superhumans because if many people can become superhuman then there would be no advantage.
>>16931240so what.evolution sucks.your average person is unexceptional, ugly and has multiple health problems.
>>16931240Star Trek Q's were still evolving after immortality. There could be accidental death, and refilling space on Earth would be the potential, so evolving does stay with us.
>>16933579>refilling space on EarthWhat do you mean by that?
>>16933586People here would fill up a space, not power god a signal between people evenly spread out with fewer numbers and more knowledge, or transport the planet.
The current selective pressures are in a bad direction anyway. It'd be better to freeze humans where they are than letting natural selection run its course, because the outcome of natural selection would be worse. However, the scenario would also prevent artificial selection, which would have the potential to bring improvement if done correctly. At the moment there doesn't seem to be a large desire to do artificial selection on humans though, at least not beyond removing certain genetic diseases, but not in a way that could actually improve humans.Additionally, there's also the possibility of structuring society in a way that brings more favorable outcomes of natural selection, without actively selecting on the humans themselves. For example, intelligence is a trait of low fitness in modern society, but if we allowed intelligent children to progress through the education system faster, they wouldn't get that big delay before they're ready to start life and have children, and thus we could counteract the negative fitness impact of intelligence simply by how we structure the education system. There could also be ways to structure society that could improve humans, rather than simply preventing decline.
>>16931240Average IQ is getting lower, niggers breed without restrictions. No, immortality wouldn't be bad
>>16931240Evolution has probably been going for a few thousand years. If you mean immortal and all the super powers it might stop, we might increase needs yet again and continue to chaos from entropy.
>>16931240>If humans actually become immortal, wouldnt human evolution stop?...Yes? Immortal implies perfection, which means no change,. That's what makes Gods exist squarely above men.
gay thread
>>16934058What if immortal humans settle on Mars that has different conditions and they have to adapt to them? There are other things that humans can evolve to adapt to, not only not getting old and dying.
>>16931240nose and ears never stop growing.your ears and nose would BE the universe.just saying.
