Which one is the right 4? I always make my 4s the left one It's just the way I was taught, I feel like it's a rarer 4

I've used the right one since I learned to write. I like to only have to use one pen stroke.

Single stroke 4 is older historically and more common typographically, and since it's faster to write more people just use the single stroke 4.
The only place you really see the fork shaped four is on digital displays since it's easier to make with a seven segment display
They're both "correct" ways to write four though, ultimately.

I wonder why the 2 different variations of 4 still exist considering Arabic numerals haven't changed for a while. Like what was the split off for these 2

That's very interesting anon. Thanks. I've noticed a slight variation in older people's 9s aswell where they are more 'g' like

you need to use the open top style for seven segment displays which have been ubiquitous for over a century

NTA, based response.

That's honestly really cool to think that my early developing brains 4 was trained on those clocks and it just stuck. I likely saw it in a car or something, I did have an alarm clock aswell but I broke it apart lol

I do open top. It's often taught in schools to avoid confusion with 9.
>>
>>16931529
It's possible you were just taught that way in preschool/1st grade.
It's pretty much arbitrary if the children's worksheets have the open top or closed top 4 in their writing practice worksheets

Why do I actually kind of remember that paper? That just sent a "wave of woah it's been a while."
>>
>>16931534
hm. why would they teach that? isnt the alternative 4 more efficient? i was trained on that 4 too.

Because those worksheets are used in basically every elementary school.

Prevents confusion with 9.

not sure but I think americans are taught the right one while in the rest of the world left is normally used

There’s no “right” one out of these, but in my opinion the four on the right is the one true four.
