saw a video on this subject a long time ago that seemed to make more sense than that thumbnail. a dragon could swallow flint stones (birds already swallow stones like that, gastroliths) that could strike each other and ignite methane gas in their upper GI tract, then essentially burp that flame out
>>
>>16932112
The problem is that the gizzard would either lack oxygen to ignite the flame, or if it somehow did it would just internally explode. It's below the true stomach in the digestive tract, though food passes back and forth between the two sacs, and it's tight, very muscular and usually flooded. I think people confuse it with the crop and gular sac which are looser, sort of balloon-like structures where food is initially gulped down alongside air, but that's not where rocks grind against each other.
>>
Later on, nothing is going to prevent some wacky scientist from finding an Earth-like planet or terraforming one, and then make dragons to put on it.

Why do people keep trying to force dragons to spit fire? It’s so dumb energetically speaking. You burn significantly more calories then you would eat from hunting alone and cooking said food would not give you the stuff you invested into it. There is a reason people didn’t burn animal fat to cook the meat, people used useless inedible wood as fuel. And having carnivore produce so much methane gas to be used as fuel is almost impossible. Large herbivores produce large amounts of methane because plants have too many carbs and not enough protein, so to get enough protein to sustain themselves they have to eat lot more which leaves lot of energy being wasted, and in case of cows that energy is used by gut bacteria to produce large amounts of methane. He explicitly said he wants dragons carnivores so no methane because meat has the opposite problem of plants. And if you add flight to that then there the caloric requirements of dragons would be impossibly huge.

My guess why it has 90 mil views is because it’s from a guy who did real life crazy experiments in normie eyes like grow samples of brain matter or use gene editing on himself, so people probably got duped into thinking he did something stupid with bird or reptile eggs.

>You burn significantly more calories then you would eat
literally
>>
>>16932562
It doesn't have to be efficient if it's not used regularly. A dragon spewing say, pure ethanol, probably still hunts with claws and stuff but has the flames ready for fights with other dragons or threats.
>>
>>16934299
Ok, but if you are an animal, a predator that sleeps and hunts their entire life why would you waste 3 days worth of fat on few s scones of fire. Bombardier beetles that all these spec evo guys trying to make dragons use as an example uses the chemical burn attack as last resort self defence when only alternative is being eaten, not for active predation.
>>
>>16935108
Consider that I, IRL, would quite happily waste 3 days of calories to spray flames at a motherfucker, because calories are not that expensive for me and having that option available in a fight would be worth much more.
>>
>>16932562
Why are you assuming a dragon would use its own body fat as fuel for its fire? I think the more logical way is consuming fruit and storing it in a special stomach pouch so it ferments and produces alcohol
>>
>>16931924

Problem is he explicitly said it would be used for hunting prey.
> ready for fights with other dragons or threats.
It might make sense for competing with other dragons for mates. Plenty of species waste a fuck ton of calories on dumb bullshit to get laid.
>>
>>16935108
Which implies there is a creature that eats dragons....

fair enough, I didn't watch the video because I thought it would be midwitslop

>Plenty of species waste a fuck ton of calories on dumb bullshit to get laid.
Yeah, I remember a documentary about deer I think mentioning that successful stags essentially ruin themselves repeatedly defending and mating with their harem during the entire season, to the point that they can rarely keep their position from year to year (but it's fine because they've ensured that every female in the vicinity is bearing their young for that year)
3 days' worth of calories is nothing in comparison.

Plenty of animals have absolutely no problem accumulating calories, and there are entire species you'll only ever see fat specimens of (unless they have some debilitating disease or are stranded in a very unsuitable environment)

Maybe dragons NEED to breath fire occasionally to avoid becoming obese and unable to fly, actually.
