Back when you were a student, did your faculty have any? Did you ever have to interact with them? Any stories?I mostly saw the odd crackpot at conferences, but they gotta be tucked away in offices SOMEWHERE
>>16932184im right here chud
>>16932184At my university there are a few faculty members, mainly resentful old guard profs/TAs, who think AI will revolutionize mathematics.I've always wanted to scream "KILL YOURSELF" at them but that would get me booted instantly.>t. arithmetic geometer
>>16932473I can definitely say they are crackpots. They do legitimate research but they are fucking crackpots in the fullest sense of the word.
>>16932475Profs anyways. The TAs can't even do [math]that[/math]. They just glaze AI as if it is the second coming of Christ.
>>16932476This is something that is really tiring. I think almost every uni is by now bound to have that one junior Prof that hopped onto that gravy train when it was fresh and who, when asked about their methods, could have their resume summarized as>I make undergrads import python packages and then shit pot 1M parameter models fitted against 10k poor quality data points >if you want to use my model I can send you a pickle file :-)
