If this story is real (probably not) it's because his mind had no limiting idea of whether the problem was solvable or not
In fact, mistaking them to be homework gave him even more excellent chances, as his mind took the task to be a mundane and already-answered question

You can do this too, largely independent of IQ variation, by engaging with the creative process
Which is to say, opening the full power of the mind up to all optimistic possibility at the subconscious belief level
And it should be noted, the subconscious is programmed through the repetition of thoughts from the conscious mind
