Why do people think we need to program AI/robots to understand, and possibly even feel, human emotions? I keep seeing the same idea that human emotions are also evolutionarily advantageous, such as fear, which helps us to understand the risk of certain actions. But why would the AI/robot actually need to feel fear to understand the ramifications of specific choices? Wouldn't it be more effective to use larger data sets and more strict training rather than turning it into an actual android? This is how AM was made.

While a robot doesn't strictly speaking need to feel fear it may still help because inevitably if you make an AI have lots of desirable traits (curiosity, independence, creativity etc) it's going to make bad decisions just as any human would and when it decides that doing a sick flip off a rooftop would be nice and then steps on bird shit and falls you sure wish it would have felt fear.More generally there's another 2 points. First we intuitively understand the world trough out own lens. We will inevitably program robots in our own image as a result. Humans emotions and thoughts aren't really well understood so it may be that simply by making a robot that's creative, intelligent, has a good memory and has some sense of self preservation it simply spontaneously develops both consciousness and feelings like fear and joy. The other point is that even if emotions were to be determined undesirable from some objective point of view AND they wouldn't spontaneously arise anyways people would still want a lot of bots that act like humans which necessitates human feelings. Outside of manual labor, human companionship will inevitably be the second largest market for bots by volume and probably the most important by market value and AI GF that can love will be lot more attractive than silicone stacy 2.0
