I took a coom algebraic class but it was way too hard and the textbook was thick. I sucked. Any tips?
>>16937327The issue with commutative algebra is that it feels so unmotivated, and as such, a lot of the results just seem to come of nowhere, so even though the proofs might be relatively simple, it seems impossible to come up with them yourself.>Any tipsStruggle through a class in algebraic geometry, and then have a second go at commutative algebra. Being completely lost and confused, and bashing your head against the wall in the beginning of AG and CA is almost a rite of passage for any mathematician who isn't a genius.
>>16937327Read and do the exercises in ch 1-3 of Atiyah-Macdonald to understand the basics of commutative rings and modules. Then start learning algebraic geometry. Fill in the rest of commutative algebra as you need it. I suggest reading "The Geometry of Schemes" by Eisenbud and Harris to get real geometric intuition for this stuff.
