Is there a scientific reason as to why humans enjoy music? Imagine explaining it to aliens:
"Yeah, so we make a bunch of noises and shit with stuff and we nod our heads to it."

it's not just humans, all vertebrates seem to enjoy music on some level.

It sounds good bro.

If you nod your head to a bunch of noises and shit, forget about music, go listen to a jackhammer in the street for free.

You can imagine a pleasant situation that will make you feel joy (positive emotions) as well as negative emotions.

Basically music makes its way from sound stimulus into some abstractions that are associated with some feelings. Artists specifically design music that way, that their brain will activate these abstractions from hearing these random noises.

Same actually goes with books, movies and everything. In the end, its just a bunch of stupid symbols or pixels on the screen, but they make your brain to imagine things. Same shit with music

It's down to pretty simple contrast. For anything to matter there must be bad experiences and good experiences. All of our senses work like this. For the image of a lion to register you must be able to have good visual experiences like seeing a booba. For there to be bad tastes there have to be good tastes. For there to be bad smells there have to be good smells. It's the same with audio. To get useful feedback out of sounds like screams or branches cracking near you you need to be able to get good feelings out of good sounds like birds singing or humans talking. This is fundamentally true for all animals.
There's an additional layer with humans for lot of these since we are social animals. Things like song and deliberate music have a long co-evolution with group dynamics where good music binds a group together and you have to be able to enjoy music to stay as part of a group. There's also the pattern seeking brain part where things like rhythms which are deeply unnatural are very interesting to us, it's good mental exercise to find and follow patterns like that in audio since it triggers the same pathways as trying to decode speech does, sometimes music even comes with lyrics baked in.

aliens like music too
