Under what circumstances would a space war between two different races even occur? Anyone who can build spaceships has a level of technology where they don't really need resources that naturally occur, so you don't need to conquer another planet for gold or some shit.

Taking aside small technical problems like the speed of light a contrast could happen about competing for some scarce resources, and yet the possibility is more a scifi plot device than anything.With such an advanced technology the universe is already full of resources everywhere, would they compete for hydrogen?
