NASA funding is highly seasonal and constantly up for changes based on the latest election results. This mission is entirely superfluous scientifically and doesn't achieve anything Artemis 1 or 4 wouldn't or didn't achieve. The reason they did it anyways is because the moon lander isn't ready and if they delay there's a good chance that the entire project simply gets defunded. Achieving small concrete and flashy steps is one way to keep up public and hence congressional interest in the program. On the other side of the funding coin they also have spending commitments such as ordering 5 SLS systems for the Artemis no matter (5 is bigger number than 4 which is good for the congressional district that manufacturers the bolts that connect the beams that make up the sub assembly...) what so you may as well blast off a black guy into space and see if anything happens. These aren't small problems either, Artemis 1 was already delayed by 8 years. Without Artemis 2 there's a good chance that the whole program could go for 2 decades with with 1 launch. SLS has been a disaster and Starship is yet another massive boondoggle that's now heavily linked with the current administration which thanks to the war in Iran is almost certain to lose power in the midterms. It's for stuff like this why NASA has to set up performative missions. You never know if the guys in charge in half a year or 2 year or 6 years from now will even want this mission anymore.
>>16950775its so annoying. when I've tried to explain what's happening to normies they have the same disappointment thinking for some reason they were supposed to land on the moon. even though no one said that. while they're being spoiled downers, I'm excited. for the first time in my life they're actually making some progress about going to the moon. this is a huge achievement. then if this goes well they'll actually land in two years and work out any kinks Artemis 2 had.
