>>16966832The testing mainly revolves around the engines and the heat shield. The whole purpose of Starship is to make it completely reusable. The engines don't need to be in orbit for testing, and the heat shield doesn't require orbit for re-entry, either. It's not about "space proofing", it's about testing to the absolute limits to figure out what works, what doesn't, and what you can get away with, in order to reduce mass or optimize certain aspects of the design.

As part of the agreement, the Commission will not require SpaceX to obtain a coastal development permit for its launch program and agreed not to consider perceived political beliefs, speech, or labor practices of SpaceX or its officers in future regulatory actions. SpaceX will share sonic boom monitoring data with the Commission. >The case is Space Exploration Technologies Corp v. California Coastal Commission, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, No. 2: 24-cv-08893. Gretchen Newsom (Alternate Commissioner) was the most vocal critic, stating that Musk was "hopping about the country, spewing and tweeting political falsehoods". She specifically called out his social media posts regarding FEMA and hurricane relief efforts. Caryl Hart (Chair) stated that the commission was "dealing with a company, the head of which has aggressively injected himself into the presidential race". >>16967188Higher thrust. Magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters like this one sit between hall effect thrusters and chemical engines. ISP is about 4000 seconds, and they want them to run for much, much longer than Hall Effect thrusters at megawatt power levels.
>>16967190Well, it’s still a good development, but if we’re doing manned mission to mars we do need burntimes that don’t require multiple long elliptical orbits around earth before getting an escape trajectory, it can’t be too low thrust either.
>>16967194do you know what a cycler orbit is?
>>16967193Sounds good.
>>16967196That’s nice for the long term, but i very much doubt our first manned mars missions will transit between a cycler station that took fucking forever to put in place beforehand.
>>16967196What is a cycler supposed to add? Best case scenario it's a collection of dry mass that you match velocity with, carrying both passengers and consumables to the target destination. What is that dry mass in the cycler orbit supposed to do for you?
>>16967199so do I because this nuclear-electric stuff probably won't be ready by then
>>16967200Comfort, mostly, you can also preposition consumables like water, oxygen and oxygen scrubbers there without having to worry as much about evaporation because insulation is not at a premium. It’s not a necessity for a mars mission but if you have the resources to put them in place, it will make it easier and safer. You can also restock cyclers even if they’re not getting used for a mission at that time.
>>16967200provide living space so your monkes don't get cabin feverand you can put more monkeys in on the next go-roundso none of this launching hundreds of small rockets to establish a colonyI mean you do launch them but they only go to high Earth orbit to rendezvous with the cyclers
>>16967205How is the Delta-V expenditure different from assembling the mission's modules in LEO and boosting the whole stack instead?
>>16967200>you match velocity withyes but the velocity you need to match with isn't all that great - the cycler falls past Earth and you intercept it when it's at its highest point before it starts falling back past Earth and to where it's going
>>16967208You don't get the speed back for free after being at the same velocity for a short time. You still need to match the energy of the cycler's trajectory to stay with it.
>>16967207by reusing the cycler - its mass only needs to be accelerated once
>>16967210you get a gravity assist as you fall with the cycler past Earththe cycler's own ion engines can make up for the differenceyou'd be expected to bting your own reaction mass, of course
>>16967205This, it lets you pack them like sardines into starship, then spread out on the cycler. The fuel expenditure is the same but the costs per passenger are much lower and you can shift loads of people.
>>16967213>>16967211Seems like an extremely complex way of doing things that doesn't gain much value until aerobraking stops being an option.
wait till you learn about the uranium antihydrogen propulsion system
>>16967137> Pluto is the most American planetI guess it is half brown
>tfw we're all going to be dead long before humanity figures out the universe, where it came from, and why it exists
>>16967239Not like that's an exclusive club.

>>16967245>leoNot spaceflight btw
If Skylab B had been launched then the shuttle would have visited and reboosted it. There would have been an American space station all through the 80s.
>>16967245this morning is FH morning
>>16967219on the contrary, aerobraking is great, you can detach some capsules and have them do two laps around Mars to brake down, expending very very little reaction mass to do so
>>16967245so when is Viasat dying? One satellite a year is less capacity than a week of Starlink launchesAlso PLEASE AMERICAN AIRLINES SWAP OFF VIASAT FUCKING PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE

>22 flights for one of the FH boostersfucking nuts.
>>16967273>but we were told booster resuse was never gonna be viable
Nice camera can see the rocket wobble a bit.
>>16966475>lipshe doesn't know
>>16967274erm ackshully spacex loses money due to reuse because all of the refurb costs and ackshully this isn't REAL reuse because they have to toss the second stage and and and
YOOOO
WheeeeeeeeWas does a crew launch get up to?
>>16967278You're trying too hard, anon
Kino tracking shot.
yayyyyy
is the center core expended?
Turns out that things are just that easy in rocketry.
>>16967287watching these things plummet back to earth and then nicely land doesn't get old
>>16967288They have never recovered one and probably gave up trying.
>>16967292They did on flight 2 but it tipped into the drink due to heavy seas. It's just cursed.
Being able to see the other land in the distance is so fucking cool
>>16967292>probably gave up tryingThere really is very little performance difference between a Falcon 9 and a Falcon heavy if you recover all 1st stages. Most of the performance in heavy comes from tossing the core downrange and having it give the 2nd stage as much extra velocity as possible. The performance expense of recovery isnt worth it, its really a case study on when reusability does and doesnt work which Spacex shoul really pay more attention to with Starship.
Who the fuck is pumping Viasat stock on $25M in profits
>>16967298>xe expects rationality from stock markets I knew sfg was dumb but come on
