omg we're literally two weeks™ away!

No. The refueling demonstration requirement alone puts Starship HLS on a timeline that doesn't close for Artemis 3 as currently scheduled. Blue Moon is closer to ready on paper but closer to ready on paper is not the same thing. NASA has moved the date before and will move it again. The more interesting question is whether the architecture survives another delay politically rather than technically.

>>16969289
The number being cited is from a configuration that isn't finalized. The upper bound estimates are higher. Neither figure has a source that isn't downstream of someone's forum post from six months ago.

Musk wants to go to Mars but Bezos wants to build O'Neill Cylinders. Has BO done anything towards making O'Neill Cylinders a reality beyond some art work? I get that they need a heavy lift rocket first but you can't wait until one stage is complete before planning for other stages.
>>
>>16969323
>you can't wait until one stage is complete before planning for other stages.
We have to fix LEO's problems first.
>>
>>16969269
it's not as if the cape is immune to hurricanes and terrible weather, flooding might be an issue but you can design around that to minimise damage to facilities when it happens
>>
>>16969327
The larger issue is that getting the sheer quantity of heavy machinery to this location may not be feasible without it turning into a total boondoggle. My buddy said the closest major roadway was I10, and that was over an hour away from where this is, not to mention the roadways to this specific parcel are probably on par with the sort of abandoned, one lane unmarked roadways common with areas like this. Boca had (has) roadway issues, and people actively lived there. Imagining them trying to transport the machinery needed to here sounds like a fuckin' nightmare. Unless Musk gets a total sweetheart deal that gives him everything and anything he wants, and Louisiana picks up the cost... I'm just not seeing it. Think about how long it took to get Boca off the ground, now imagine that the difficulties of that are made significantly worse by every metric. From manpower, to transport, to just getting food.

Elon-sama, I trust in you
>>
what education do i need to work in aerospace?
>>
>>16969346
Honestly? Aerospace is one of those industries where if you have to ask you're probably already behind, no offense. The guys I know who are actually doing incredible things in this space -- and I know a lot of them, really tremendous people -- most of them were obsessed since they were kids. Like genuinely obsessed. That said, aerospace engineering, mechanical, electrical, all good. But the dirty secret nobody tells you is that half the best hires I've seen come from the military pipeline. Discipline, clearances, actual real world experience. You can't replicate that in a classroom.

>>16969330
The Louisiana thing is going to work out better than people think. I've been down there, incredible state, incredibly underrated. People underestimate what can get done when there's real political will behind something. And right now there is a LOT of political will. Trust me on that one.

>>16969323
Jeff is a great guy but the O'Neill cylinder stuff is a long way out. Long way out. You solve the launch cost problem first, everything else follows. That's just good business.
>>
>>16969347
is it easier to get into defense and work on missiles?
>>
>>16969348
Oh absolutely. Defense is a great entry point, genuinely. Raytheon, Lockheed, Northrop -- these are incredible companies with incredible people and the missile work specifically is some of the most interesting engineering happening anywhere in the world right now, I mean that. The clearance you build doing that work opens every door. Every single one. I've seen guys go from defense contractor to SpaceX to running their own programs. The pathway is very real. Only thing I'd say is know going in whether you want to stay in defense long term or use it as a launchpad, no pun intended, because the cultures are pretty different. Defense moves slower, more process, more oversight, which some guys love actually. Nothing wrong with that. But if you've got the itch to move fast you'll know pretty quickly.

> Our innovative storage depot mission employs thin, lightweight, all-solid-state panels attached to the tank’s deep-space-facing surfaces that utilize a long-understood but as-yet-unrealized cooling technology known as Electro-Luminescent Cooling (ELC) to reject heat from cold solid surfaces as non-equilibrium thermal radiation with orders of magnitude more power density than Planck’s Law permits for equilibrium thermal radiation. Such a depot and tank would drastically lower the cost and complexity of propulsion systems for crewed Mars missions and other deep space exploration by allowing spacecraft to refill propellant tanks after reaching orbit rather than launching on the much larger rocket required to lift the spacecraft in a single-use stage.

>>
I don't know who to believe, Elon or Phil Mason
>>

I swear I remember Elon saying during some presentation that the gubmint literally forced them to torture seals, though I can't find it. He also said that they were obliged to conduct some environmental study in case a rocket crashes onto the ocean and hits... a whale, yeah.

We're about to get a whole set of new exoplanets with Roman and PLATO. I wish they'd fast-track HWP though.

Exoplanets have been all shitty so far
Trappist 1e shows a little promise. Seems to have a normal atmosphere and is earth sized
It'll probably still be a shithole.

My bet is TRAPPIST-1 e has a thin Mars-like atmosphere. Maybe the new 'scopes can confirm KOI-4878.01 which has very Earth-like properties. Only problem is we'll never reach it.
>>
>>16969949
>Based on four observations of TRAPPIST-1e using the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRSpec instrument, researchers were unable to find conclusive evidence for or against the presence of an atmosphere. The analysis showed two models the data could adequately explain. The first is a flat-line model, which could mean two things: TRAPPIST-1e is a bare rock; or it has an atmosphere of an unknown type completely hidden by a high, thick cloud deck. The second model is a range of nitrogen-rich atmospheres, with nitrogen as the dominant gas. Within the nitrogen scenarios, there is a "tentative preference" for trace amounts of methane (CH4) mixed in. The authors conclude that the primary limitation in studying TRAPPIST-1e is mitigating the effects of its active star. To overcome this, a new program of 15 additional JWST observations is underway. This program will observe back-to-back transits of TRAPPIST-1e and its neighboring planet, TRAPPIST-1b, which is believed to be a bare rock. By using the signal from the bare rock planet to correct for the star's activity, it may be possible to reveal whether TRAPPIST-1e has an atmosphere.
>>
>>16969951
This is a good thing for the planet's habitability chances, BTW. It means a thick hydrogen envelope is ruled out and furthet studies can confirm the presence of an N2 atmosphere.

>was supposed to be
No? it was supposed to be spacex’s first medium lift rocket, even first stage re-use was tacked on later, and they realized very quickly that at that scale, 2nd stage re-use wasn’t going to be worth doing. They never “promised” falcon 9 full re-use to anyone.

What’s up with people trying to create fake promises/statements that spacex never made?
>>
>>16969947
You just have to imagine you’re an EDS schizo on /sfg/ who spams the thread because he’s an attentionwhore.

>What’s up with people trying to create fake promises/statements that spacex never made?
It's most prevalent among people who thought they had a surefire money making opportunity in shorting Tesla stock and then they actually delivered on the most important part (The Model 3) and that put their stock through the roof and the shorts lost their shirts. This describes most of his most vocal critics, including Thunderf00t.

"Falcon 5 and Falcon 9 will be the world’s first launch vehicles where all stages are designed for reuse."

>>
>>16969973
no, it was a vehicle that allowed them to learn whether first stage re-use was possible in the first place.

screeching for negative attention on an imageboard like this is pathetic, don't you have friends that you can hang out with, or at least a hobby?
>>
>>16969975
It was designed for reuse. They said it literally in their press announcement. And Elon Musk in 2017 still were confident that SpaceX can reuse the upper stage of Falcon 9 "next year".

https://x.com/elonmusk/status/850453029987917824
>>
Falcon 9 was supposed to do rapid reuse, just like Starship.

>Our goal, just to give you a sense of how reusable we think the design can be, we intend to demonstrate two orbital launches of the same Block 5 vehicle within 24 hours, no later than next year.

>The key to Block 5 is that it’s designed to do 10 or more flights with no refurbishment between each flight — or at least not scheduled refurbishment between each flight. The only thing that needs to change is you reload propellant and fly again

So Starship is basically the same promises as Falcon 9 but with a bigger payload?
>>
no, it's just the same promise, period.
the bigger payload was just a necessary tack on to make the promise practical.

"Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) class vehicle" refers to the program, they didn't mean that Falcon 9 was supposed to be expendable. Do you think:
>SPACEX ANNOUNCES THE FALCON 9 FULLY REUSABLE HEAVY LIFT LAUNCH VEHICLE
>Falcon 5 and Falcon 9 will be the world’s first launch vehicles where all stages are designed for reuse
was just a typo or how to you explain that?

>More details on the SR-1 Freedom (gay name).
>The goal is to generate 20 kilowatts of electrical power using high-assay low-enriched uranium, or HALEU.
>The reactor will be placed at one end of a truss to protect spacecraft electronics from the radiation it produces.
>At the other end of the truss will be the PPE, that NASA had planned to use on the Gateway.
>Adapted from PPE, built by Lanteris Space Systems, using power from the reactor.
>Between the reactor and the PPE will be radiators for heat rejection from the reactor.
>Solar arrays to provide additional power, particularly immediately after launch, before the reactor is activated.
>Space nuclear effort that has made little progress for decades despite multiple efforts that have spent a combined $20 billion.
>The lack of an operational space nuclear reactor is not a technology problem but rather an operational one
>SR-1 Freedom is designed to break every one of four failure modes of the past
>NASA as the prime. Leverage the expertise of the Department of Energy to design and assemble the reactor, then commercialize
>The reactor design is intended to be extensible to future missions such as the Lunar Reactor 1

Since there are still people who doubt Falcon 9 was supposed to be fully reusable, here a video from 2011 from SpaceX with a reusable Falcon 9 second stage.

Red dragon was killed by politics, but FH prop crossfeed and reusable F9 S2 were killed by physics.

>>
>>16970049

is prop crossfeed really that hard to do?
>>
>>16970051
There's a ton of unique and heavy plumbing spaghetti that you need for crossfeed, and any inter-vehicle plumbing leak is a prodigious fire hazard around the base of the rocket. The flow would be turbulent, the flow shutoff dynamics would be a nightmare, dead zones in rocket plumbing are a great way to find things going wrong in exciting ways, etc. It's not physically impossible, but it's complex in the ways that make it not worth doing.
