I got exposed to a 180 mW 532 nm Nd-YAG laser light scattered off a surface for a duration of 0.25 seconds. I saw a scotoma in both my eyes in the centre, that disappeared after a few seconds. Are my retinas permanently fried?

Ask a dr not 4chan anon! Also get a lawyer if this was someone elses laser.

Yes, that's way above damage thresholds. Go see a doctor, and wear laser goggles next time.

if it disappeared after a few seconds, probably not
but you could go to the doctor or just optometrist, they should be able to see retina damage unless it's extremely minor

That's it. But I probably need to undergo a 10-2 Humphrey visual field evaluation to look for reduced sensitivity in the macular region.

Those tests are not very precise in my experience. I have a condition in which I randomly develop small permanent scotomas. I can block the mouse cursor with a couple of them if I put it in the right spot. And I've done every test at multiple ophthalmologists and they could not find a single thing. They said my retina looks almost perfect. If it's a small scotoma is just won't show up on those tests.

You could try testing where the scotomas are using your screen. Stare at one spot and move the cursor to the scotoma area and see if it disappears or anything.

But yeah you should still go to a doctor if you're concerned.

I thankfully don't have a scotoma yet lol. Sorry about your condition though. Do you ever get headaches or anything like that? I have a friend who describes scotomas that flicker like candlelight, that are followed by headaches, his retina is completely OK as well.

No headaches. I do get occasional aura migraines but they are different from the scotomas (the migraine affects vision is both eyes while the scotomas are in one eye only). I fouund a group of people with a very similar condition on some medical forum. Many had been to ophthalmologists etc and most could find nothing. But some found minor retinal damage. Might depend on their equipment. Anyway it seems like it's not a big deal.

Go see a doctor. Now.
He'll look into your retina and see if damaged.
Do it now! Not a week from now.

You're being a pussy. Go find an experienced laser operator to bitch to. Bring them a pickle jar to open for you so your time wasn't completely wasted.
