It's the taboo that is the common factor. Acting out in defiance is releasing adrenaline which can stimulate the dopamin system (D2 receptors to be specific).
This is likely the reason why schizophrenics has adrenalin spiking psychotic symptoms as well. Dopamin is extremely important and when it isn't produced the ordinary ways evolution has provided others. These symptoms has probably helped our predecessors by forcing them to seek out new pastures for better nutrition or at the very least not procreating successfully.

The 5-HTP kind of psychedelic experience is of a completely different kind and the visuals are not hallucinations like seeing uncanny people or disfigurement or experiencing subtle threats and paranoia.
Both dopamin and serotonin are metabolites from our gut bacteria which is dependent on what we eat. That is why I'm proposing an evolutionary explanation for how the symptoms have actually benefited our predecessors by being scared away (by hallucinations) to find better pastures for the gut bacteria.
