“Rocketry” as a subject/hobby/fascination is so far removed from normies that it’s understandably hard for them to imagine how it all works. But like if you play around enough you start to realize that ‘fooling around in orbit w/ KSP rcs docking thrusters’ and ‘jumping a canyon with a car and doing a roll flip with thrusters’ are the same thing, if the math checks out. We don’t often imagine large objects hovering and maneuvering and hitting the X,Y,Z (other than rockets going straight up and slowly leaning, which is the normie’s frame of reference)

Fairings with reusable starship
>>
>>17079022
I'm willing to believe that 22 is just the most conservative possible estimate since that's what ASAP does, but how the fuck are 6-8 flight possibly supposed to be enough? You'd need 200 t payload or something like that and even Vn+1 is still trying to get to 100 t right now.

>>17079159
Even if you can put the flaps that far back this probably changes aerodynamics too much, but imagine
>>
>>17079160
I imagined the fairings falling away and being picked up just like with falcon 9. So it wouldn't need flaps.

My point is they have experience launching plenty of times that getting starship to launch as many times at falcon shouldn't be much of a stretch. As in if it can fly 8 times it should be able to fly 22 with quick turn around.
This is assuming the tanker launches are after starship starlink launches become regular.

They are still stuck in the oldspace mentality. They cannot comprehend multiple launches in a day even though this is already occuring and SpaceX is rapidly scaling to doing so routinely and further scaling to multiple launches per hour. This information conflicts with pre existing information from the old space era however. They are the same people who could not envision Falcon scaling to what it did.

regarding actual spessflight though, what kind of payload mass do you think starship will be able to safely return from orbit? one could launch a starship with no payload so that you have more fuel on the way down, wonder how that would play out, would there be a structural limit or a delta-v limit first?

Starship keeps blowing up when splashing down because the header tank propellant lines end up rupturing when the ship hits the water sideways. The mass of the payload on the upper dome and other load bearing elements in that part of he vehicle might exacerbate this particular structural weakness during the flip maneuver when returning to Earth with a large payload. This is, however, purely speculative, but I hope the engineers have looked into it.

that's what i was thinking, there's gotta be some point where the extra mass at the top of the vehicle buckles something during the flip maneuver, whether or not starship would even be able to deorbit something that heavy and still have enough fuel to land i don't know.

Orion docks to Starship on Flight Day 8. Two hours, no entry into Starship. Undocks.

End of mission: Reentry. Splashdown.

nah, ukraine made every attempt to avoid a war, they were so dumbfounded at the retardation of russia's decision that they weren't even mobilising their army until after russia actually invaded, despite them gathering on the border in advance.
zelensky was also the soft on russia candidate in ukraine, people often forget this.

literally all russia had to do was not start a genocidal war for no reason, they had nothing to gain and everything to lose, they were not under threat, nobody was planning to use ukraine as a staging point to invade russia.

russia started the war and is wholly responsible for it's persistence.

A key question surrounding SpaceX’s architecture is the number of refuelings required to top off a Starship for a lunar mission. On Thursday a NASA Safety Panel reported that the current number of tanker launches is “about 22.” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said that estimate was wrong, and that the actual number will be six to eight.

During a question-and-answer session on Friday afternoon, NASA officials declined to put a precise number on the refueling launches required. A lot of uncertainty remains in the lift capacity of Starship, as well as in how much cryogenic methane and liquid oxygen will boil off in orbit and how efficient the process of transferring propellants from one ship to another will be.

However, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said this of the estimate of 6 to 8 launches proffered by Musk: it was possible, but represented the “ultimate potential end state” of Starship.

So the number is 22+ but Izzy is trying to got a call from Musky begging to save face. Sad.
>>
>>17079605
22 is the number to fully refuel which is not needed for artemis >>17079509
>>
22 EXPENDABLE refueling launches is still less than half the cost of a single SLS launch. Let that sink in.

>The SpaceX graphic has two "refuel HLS" events, one in LEO (item 4) and one in a higher orbit (item 6) with "multiple" tanker launches associated with each one.

So two depots, one that has to be kicked into a higher orbit and some involved tanker gymnastics?

Pretty sure it's only one depot. It's just that it'll be filled up twice.
The first filling is for HLS to boost itself into a higher orbit (FTO). The second filling is for the depot itself to climb up to FTO and filling HLS again so it can push Orion to the Moon.

It you listen to what was actually said during the update that is the window where they can refuel, not that they are doing multiple refuelings.

>And this graphic here, we showed the full concept of operations for an accelerated lunar landing mission. Then I'm going to walk you through here briefly. The Starship propellant aggregation still takes place in low earth orbit before the crew launch in Orion and SLS, allowing for additional refueling and flexibility in crew launch timing. This accelerated approach has the Starship lander docking with Orion and what is now a high earth orbit, before performing the translunar injection burn, or what we call kind of a push of Orion to low lunar orbit. So that is instead of meeting up around the moon, we're going to actually use the starship to push us out there. Our teams found that if we modified Orion to be able to be pushed, we could drastically simplify the number of launches and really improve the probability of success of the mission.
