What other platforms for talking to people do you recommend?
I actually wanna know too cause Discord is going to go to shit very soon once they go public and sell an IPO. We're literally on the last moments of discord not being a monetized enshittified mess. Everything is going to be Nitro exclusive. They're going to spam ads all over the client. Voice and video calls will be bitrate limited(unless you watch an add or do a quest of course!). They'll create an "AI" named some retarded shit like Turbo meant to "help" its users "find servers" and also functions as an AI chat companion for people who feel lonely, that will also secretly(IT'S NOT SECRET YOU AGREED TO SELL YOUR SOUL TO US IN THE EULA FAGGOT DON'T YOU READ?) train on all the messages and media you send. They'll also make their in game overlay have a fucking ad lmfaoo. Imaging your friends in the corner and a fucking Draft kings banners in the other. Oh man I can keep going. They're already going to lose Giphy, you can bet gifs are going to be a nitro exclusive perk. Server owners will be able to "monetize" their servers which Discord will take a cut of. It goes on and on and on
>>34685230..are you an employee there or are you just saying stuff?? Because if its the latter I unclaim this negative energy
>>34685277Oh my bad it's not Giphy, it's Tenor. DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU
>>34685281sooooooo any good alternatives??
>>34685230>>34685281Schizo retard. All public voip clients/chatrooms are bugged by every three letter agencies. This is public information.
>>34685339No >>34685343They are all the same. Its all either a money grab, or some chinky clone designed to do the same thing, but worse.
>>34685277>are you an employee there or are you just saying stuffits the standard silicon valley model. unless they have very idealistic founders, a large company will offer 5b+ and they'll take the deal. Could be google or microsoft buying another chat app to kill, could be somebody like epic dropping a shitload of fortnite money to buy locked-in advertising targets, could be fucking softbank. we'll find out when it happens >>34685230as long as I can still use discord in pidgin instead of the official client I'll be okay>>34685339>sooooooo any good alternatives??we'll find out when discord goes to shit. there's dozens of startup chat apps with a moderate userbase right now and in a few years one will start to hit its straps with discord refugees. I'd keep an eye on whatever has a very low barrier to first use without being an overwhelmingly spammy shithole, discord were amazing at that.
>>34685230discord has always been shit honestly the people you end up coming across are tards, mega coomers or people just trying to use you as some sort of therapist when you truly dont care (sorry to say), is there even any good alternatives?? probably never
Are there really no alternatives?
>>34685143if you dont use discord servers then uh literally anything bro, best options are:emailXMPP (you can bridge that shit to discord and whatsapp but you have to set it up yourself)
>>34687698The people who know don't want you to know, which is fucked up but the truth
Is IRC still a thing?
>>34689200You're supposed to click the search bar before typing that in not the post box.
>>34687698>>34688909Teamspeak/mumble exist and are pretty much the only consistently used platforms left. Despite this even they are dying.
>>34689924TS/Mumble are barely comparable to discord at all. TS might have been significantly changed since last I used it, but mumble is essentially just VOIP. I don't think it even has persistent chat or universal personal messaging, let alone inline video support.Every alternative either has a sort of passable IRC experience and dismal VOIP, or decent VOIP and a dismal IRC experience. There is no actually good alternative. And even if TS updated to be comparable I don't see something proprietary ever getting popularity going into the future when the other proprietary competitor has a complete monopoly.
>>34690836TS with it's (admittedly half baked) update features consistent chats, friends lists, screen sharing, and a visual overhaul that looks quite nice. It still has many issues for me, but if my friends were willing to swap there would be absolutely 0 hesitation to do so from me. I'd even pay for the server (which you unfortunately have to do).>Dismal VOIP experienceI believe both TS and Mumble (tho I haven't used Mumble since I was much younger so I can't entirely verify this one, mainly speaking on memory for that) have much higher quality and in the case of TS, lower latency VOIP. This is an objective measure by which it is better.>Bad IRCCan't argue with that. Discord pretty much kills both of them on this, even with TS's modern update. It hurts so bad that they advertised this update for over a year hyping it up so hard that they'll kill discord just to release a half finished mess. I love Teamspeak, but until they actually put their foot down and compete truly with discord no normie will ever touch them.
>>34691138Obviously mumble and TS have good VOIP quality, I'm saying it's one or the other. You either have a comparable lobby style VOIP system that discord based on TS/vent/mumble, or you have something like element/matrix that has a sort of passable messaging system with an absolutely worthless VOIP system. There isn't anything FOSS that covers all the bases of being passable at everything discord can do, let alone better at any of it (besides encryption I guess, which normies don't care about).
>>34691271True. :( makes me very sad. Thanks for clarifying.>FOSS platformI wish we had a FOSS Discord. Bright future that would be.
Use element/matrix
>>34685143what the actual fuck is teleguard and why is everyone on this board using it i have never heard of it before. how private is it or is just more in the vain of kick and snapchat
>>34691386One look in the teleguard thread and it’s just a bunch of coomers, so I don’t even bother with it. All the kik/teleguard/sess threads look the same and i don’t see the point
>>34691389This is exactly what I associate those apps with. I discovered signal and teleguard because of 4chan, and I only ever see them being used for degeneracy and actual CP bait. I won't go anywhere near those apps.
>>34691386>how private is itIt's proprietary, so not even remotely. It's just fed honeypot shit that coomers use. Normal people that want to use alternatives to discord typically just post an element/matrix account, I sparingly ever see coomers use that. Matrix sucks, but it's fine for how people usually interact 1 on 1 on /soc/. And won't get you lumped in with the degenerates by using it.>>34691394Signal is also more normie friendly and a lot of people are using it these days. It isn't really in the same vein as the other shit you're talking about.
>>34691447oh wait I got signal and sess mixed up
>>34691456The later is also very secure and private, probably the most secure and private of any of the messengers actually. But that's why it's banned here and why you see so much glownigger types using it, because it actually works unlike the rest. Essentially the TOR of messengers.
yeah this sucks. i dont got an answer either but i asked a similar question a while back and got a few decent answers but mostly reinforces how little alternatives there are nowadays to modern platforms.
