20 years ago, everyone was pretty much forced to watch whatever was on being broadcast TV. So it became a common topic that everyone could talk about. The World Cup and other major sporting events like the Olympics were broadcasted on free-to-watch TV , so everyone in the country would watch it and discuss it the next day at school or at work.Nowadays, with Youtube and streaming services you can pretty much pick and choose exactly what you want to consume no matter how niche your interests are. And social media/forums allow you to talk with like-minded people around the world instead of being forced to interact with people around you and find a common interest to discuss.
