At the time, "soccer" was in acceptable use because in northern England that's the term they used. Pic rel shows the predominance of rugby league clubs, whose fans use "football" to refer to rugby league. The rest of the country was fine with that, but then "soccer" began to be associated with America. The backlash against "soccer" is a comparatively recent thing, but "football" has always been the mainstay term for decades if not centuries.

Rugby and Soccer came from the same root sport, a primordial version of football where you could both kick the ball down the pitch and also carry it and run to the goal line, which also allowed more physical play.
At some point, the Football Association codified a ruleset where carrying the ball was illegal and you were no longer allowed to hack other players legs.
Many clubs took umbridge with these rule changes, and instead played under the Cambridge, or Rugby School, ruleset, which encouraged more physical play
This would spawn two off shoot sports, Association Football, also called Soccer, and Rugby Football, also called Rugby. These would eventually evolve into what we can recognize today

Football originally meant any type of sport that wasn't played on horseback

There's only one code of football where the use of hands is generally not allowed and yet its fans keep picking at the others (well, just one in particular) as not truly being "football"
