It’s dumb because the format sucks because of it, because the group stage is worthless now, because hosting is harder, and because it was an obvious FIFA politics move to pander to Asia and AfricaThe 32 team format was perfect. Not that great either.Now, as for which world cups I can properly rate, I'd say 2002 onwards. 2002 was fine in terms of hosts, but the games weren't that convincing. 2006 is probably my favourite in terms of atmosphere, but obviously, being more immersed in it by virtue of it taking place here does skew my opinion on that - then again, I also think it had a pretty good level of play, so there's that. 2010 was on the one hand a pretty intense cup ob the field, and that makes it memorable, the only thing that dragged it down were the vuvuzelas that every child in the neighbourhood had and used around the clock. 2014 had memes, but, really, not that many great games. Brazil were a great host though. Overall, I'd put 2014 in the same tier as 2002. 2018 was kinda bad all around, and the first time I really felt that FIFA sold out to the host country. Also not very memorable. 2022 very much the same in all regards, except with human rights violations on top. And, to no one's surprise, it got even worse with this world cup now. Granted, it's still in the early stages, but the overstuffed group phase alone is a massive turnoff. None of the games so far have been impressive in any way, and all the teams looked okay-ish at best, with clear vulnerabilities. There is no real hype, the atmosphere is dogshit, there are ad-breaks every 23 minutes and the whole thing is way too amercanised.Anyway, to answer your question: Of the cups I can rate from personal experience, 2006 and 2010 are my favourites.
