Why does Portugal gets treated as if they are football superpower?

> No World Cup finals appearances.
>No major trophy win until 2016.
> Only two semi finals appearances in the World Cup
> Lost to fucking Greece in 2004 Euro at their own home.
>>
>>155441486
The funny blackman streamer told me their guy was the best
>>
>>155441486
But CR7 THEY COULD WIN ONE!
>>
>>155441486
Because ronaldo and that’s the only reason
>>
Because portuguesefags are loud obnoxious faggots when it comes to poverty ball
>>
>>155441486
to be fair - they're only "treated as a superpower" by ragebaiting cringelords on internet forums/social media
if you talk to anyone who actually follows football, they'll rate portugal about italy tier at best (current italy, not the good italy from the past)
>>
Portugal is a tiny country with 10 million people.

They actually punch above their weight.
>>
>>155441486
They have a stacked team.

Best central midfield in the world.
Best left back in the world.
Top class wingers

If they stopped playing a lamppost up top, they could go far.
>>
>>155441486

because they have nothing else
>>
Have you forgotten Eusebio?
>>
>>155441522
you forgot to turn off the VPN
>>
>>155441604
If I had a VPN, I would gladly hide away my faggot 3rd world country flag
>>
>>155441586
Eusebio, Futre, Figo, Rui Costa, Couto, Pauleta...
>>
>>155441490
this! so. much. this! the hekin big black dickerino streamer just LOVES this guy!
>>
>>155441486
>Why does Portugal gets treated as if they are football superpower?
Great player factory, Lisboa's camps alone have pulled out stuff like Eusebio, Futre, Figo, Quaresma and Cristiano. The others pull very efficient ones too, it is a constant since the 80's.
>>
>>155441486
I will try to explain it to you
>Haven't missed a tournament since 98 only Germany, France and Spain have done better than that (we would have made it to 98 too if we weren't robbed)
>Consistently strong at the Euros
>European champions
>2 different ballon d'or winners which obviously brings more attention to the team when you have the best player in the world
>Players at top teams especially England which overrates them

Let me ask you a question, why is England a football superpower?
>>
>>155441486
they don't. everyone knows they are mid tier with 1 excellent player.
>>
>>155441490
I actually fucking hate speed so much. Never seen such a retarded human being get so much undeserved success and of course he uses his clout to draw attention to a washed up Ronaldo instead of literally any other player.
>>
>>155441953
>why is England a football superpower?
Because they rigged it that one time
1966 belonged to us, but they would never allow us to win because Salazar bad
>>
>>155441486
Now apply the same logic to England
>>
>>155442468
At least England has a World Cup.

England have been cheated out of about 4 world cups. We're the creator of the game. We've got the best fans in the world. We're always entertaining in tournaments, one way or another. All eyes on us
>>
>>155441486
Our retarded barely literate populace needs constant distraction to forget about their shitty lives if only for a little while. Football in general gets an unhealthy amount of airwave time and it's all people talk about at the drinking dens

TLDR jews killed our king a century ago and have subverted us beyond repair
>>
Relevance isn't based on success. Look at Netherlands; they are still revered from the era of the 1970s when they won fuck all, and then again in the 90s when they also won fuck all. They played great football and looked good in the process. Same with Brazil; in 6 years time they can unironically sing the original Three Lions 30 years of hurt line and have it be perfectly apt. But they brought us joga bonita, looking good in Nike ads, the iconic yellow/blue/white kit combo. Even with the Euros win in 2016 their late 90s/early 2000s era was more significant since they had a golden generation, iconic aesthetic team. And Eusebio. Had Eusebio and their team fro m25 years ago not existed by they memed still memed a Euros in 2016 (like Greece in 2004) they still wouldn't be relevant. The winning had no impact.

>Why does Portugal gets treated as if they are football superpower
They don't. As for why they're rated by so many people, it's the same reason why the actual superpowers (BRA/GER/ITA) don't get rated at the moement. Portugal have a good squad filled with elite players, have performed well in the years ahead of the WC and are competitive overall.
>>
This isn't hard to understand: any country with great players (not just one or two) is considered good, not matter what the country actually achieves (Belgium is a good example, or England). The more world class players you have, the more you're rated. Simple as.

And like it or not, but Portugal have a lot of amazing players in their starting lineup right now.
>>
>>155442752
They couldn't even beat Doctor Congo.
>>
>>155442773
Portugal works better under pressure. We're not used to being favorites. Being underestimated is what always puts us above
>>
>>155442773
Spain 2010 and Argentina 2022 debuted with losses. This draw means nothing. Yes they played like shit, no I don't think they'll win, but Portugal are undeniably stacked and could aim high in this world cup. Even the most casual football watcher could tell you Portugal has some of the best players in the world.
>>
>>155442917
I hope you're right, Zuca.

t. Tourist that knows nothing about Portugal from the past 2 years other than this pathetic performance.

The thing about dedicated and hypercompetitive athletes like him is that they don't know how to stop. Most of them have spent years being told and telling themselves motivational statements about hard work, discipline and overcoming challenges. Then they reach a point where they can't let go out of their own volition.
His "eu sou o melhor" interview says all you have to know about his mindset. His whole life he's been convincing himself that if he works hard enough and believes he can win, he could do it. And I'm sure it has helped him. But now that he's old and shit he still believes this is just another challenge he has to overcome and he can't give up now. He never gave up before, so he can't do it now.

He won't stop until someone tells him Portugal is done with him. If coaches just wait for him to stop on his own terms, we'll see Cristiano in 2034 thinking that being the oldest player in World Cup histoty is a testament to his longevity and work ethic.

>Portugal have a good squad filled with elite players
The thing is that we really don't
We have 3 CL winners and that's it, the rest are either divas, pecho frios or both
In the Congo match players were strolling around like they were winning by 5 and were just waiting for the match to end, it was absolutely grim

You really can't win if the majority of the team doesn't take the game seriously
Idk if you watched our game but they absolutely weren't playing for a win, there was literally no effort
At least Spain tried to score, we literally did not
>>
because I love Portugal, I would die for Portugal, I will support Portugal until my last breath
>>
>>155444159
>>155444556
We played badly, but I think it's silly to say that the people that expected us to be favorites were just le idiots. On paper, we clearly have a composition that the average team in this world cup is jealous of.
>>
>>155444574
We will likely play well against Uzbekistan because but I don't see us getting past the first top team we face
Colombia match will be another disaster, Uruguay 2018 or worse
>>
>>155444556
And for some reason you think having an all star team would change that?

You played just like we played our first half, only difference is Deschamps ripped the players a new one at half time while your coach is terrified at the idea of subbing out Ronaldo. You don't have a player problem, you have a coaching problem.
>>
>>155444600
I could see us getting lucky enough to make it to the quarters, somehow, but after that performance against Congo, that's as high as I'm setting my hopes.

They always produced great players, their clubs tend to do quite well in international competitions and their National team has become quite stacked in recent years. Problem is: They are bogged down by Ronaldo

>>

a country is considered good at football when they're good at football
they have good clubs, good players, a good national team, history
they won the Euro (even if it was a shitty win)

The PSG trio along with Cancelo and Bernardo Silva would be starters in pretty much any team. Neto and Fernandes are pretty good players too. I can't comment on your /tugão/ defenders and goalie. I can't point out any problems in the team other than TSUUUUU and the fact that the team seemed somewhat disorganised and spaced out. But then as the other anon said, it's a coaching problem.

You think that was legit?
>>
Portugal's football history is so weird. How come they have so few world cup appearances? They had Eusebio and disappeared for a while before Figo and eventually, CR7 showed up
>>
>>155455322
>How come they have so few world cup appearances
There used to be fewer teams. Qualifying used to be challenging and Portugal only became regulars after the format expanded to 32 teams.
>>
>>155455322
portugal is part of ueafa. uefa is the strongest association but only gets limited world cup slots. world cup isn't about the top teams but some forced quota to allow other continents, too.
