If the atacker starts the run from behind the defenders(on side) he is not offside and outruns them he has open space to the goal keeper. There is a tatic called offside trap where you play with high lines exactly for that but its a delicate balance. If for example that last red circle in your image in the moment of the pass was in line with the defenders instead of being ahead he is not offside. If he then sprints foward to receive the ball he is face to face with the Goalkeeper if the defender doesnt acompany him. The more i explain the more complicated it sounds but its really simple if you understand the mexhanics. You pick it up instintivly if you watch the game or play it.
