The top priority of our football association is to act as a comprehensive shield against any sporting, fiscal, financial, or political misdeeds committed by Inter and Roma in order to protect these two clubs from the gargantuan debt they have been carrying for decades; the same two clubs, in a normal country with properly enforced financial regulations on the sporting side, would have gone bankrupt three times in the last twenty years. The leadership of AIA (the Italian Referees' Association) is currently investigation by the Financial Police for complicity in sports fraud and match-fixing for a very specific reason.
To add to the bleak state of affairs in the corridors of power, Serie A is no longer capable of identifying Italian talent and developing it through consistent, low-key training (that is, free from unnecessary media attention driven by vested interests) and a rigorous apprenticeship, because over the years the application of the sporting regulations has been completely neglected, distorted and undermined, particularly in refereeing decisions and the use of VAR since at least 2021. Consequently, players who excel in the league are more likely to crack under pressure at crucial moments (such as the play-off against Bosnia), whilst those who are less conspicuous on league matchdays are capable of putting in decent performances. National team call-ups are also undermined by agents, sports agents and club executives (from the football clubs mentioned above) for substantial financial gain, a fact that further undermines meritocracy within the Italian football hierarchy.
Bearing in mind this summary of grounds, it's easy to see why the competitiveness of the national team may have plummeted over the years.
