IFAF World Championship used to exist for tackle football. Every 4 years, last one was in 2015. The problem was that the second America joined it was a non-stop win streak from 2007 to 2015.

FIBA is also a thing as basketball is growing internationally.

Currently the closest thing we have to FIFA is international cricket, and that's only because India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have huge populations to make cricket the second most popular sport in the world.

The same reasons football sucks (low scoring, highly luck dependent) is why it's so popular. One goal is all it takes meaning underdogs still have a chance to win against a better team, that uncertainty means everyone's team can do something, even if they're shit, all it takes is for the better team to miss their chances and for the worse team to score their one chance.

In a sport like basketball or whatever, the better team is just gonna win virtually every time, you make more chances that easily translates to more points and a win, making it boring to watch if your team isn't at least as good as the opposing team, since you can safely assume they're going to lose. Not saying upsets don't happen but they're relatively much rarer.

Football is the best sport for a world cup type event, and that further reinforces its popularity in the countries that play in it, in addition to how accessible it is.

Contrary to popular misconception football is the original og game passed down by the ancients, rugby comes from some retard quite literally picking up the ball in is hands and running with it and saying why can't we do this and egghand-type games all came from that. And that is their official origin story for the game, they somehow romanticized some guy just picking up the ball and running. The ancients knew that it didn't make any sense, that it would just be shit and pointless and dangerous (CTE-style).

When I was a playing football in primary school there was this semi-retarded kid who did exactly that, we were all playing football and suddenly he just grabbed the ball with his hand and ran with it and everyone chased him to get it back, happened at least twice. That for me encapsulates rugby.
