Everyone else goes to the World Cup.The Japanese stay behind and clean up after everyone else.Different cultures.
For the past several years I have been conducting what cn only be described as a large-scale field study on dominance hierarchies in modern society. The methodology is simple: I occasionally leave public toilets unflushed and then position myself nearby to observe the outcome. The results have been remarkably consistent. Not once has anyone confronted me. Not once has anyone attempted to identify the perpetrator. Instead, some unsuspecting subject inevitably discovers the situation, pauses briefly, and then resolves it himself. In many cases he will literally inspect another grown man's turd and personally send it on its journey. The most fascinating finding is that these individuals often appear irritated, yet still comply. This suggests the average male would rather perform sanitation duties for a stranger than risk a mildly uncomfortable social interaction. The implications for leadership, authority, and human behavior are profound and warrant further research.

Rather than waiting outside the restroom, I now position myself directly beside the stall with a clipboard and notepad. This makes it unmistakably clear who is responsible for the unflushed toilet. Remarkably, subject behavior remains unaltered. The typical participant will glance at me, glance at the toilet, briefly assess the situation, and then flush another grown man's turd. I often record a small chuckle at this stage. The fight-or-flight response appears to conclude with compliance at an extraordinarily high rate. The data continue to support the hypothesis that the average male would rather perform sanitation duties for a stranger than endure a mildly uncomfortable confrontation.
