The thing is we have always been under someone elses boot and got our asses kicked every time we tried to rise up, so we tend to gravitate towards endless passive agression. Furthermore I don't think the Belgian elites mind that they can easily play the 2 halves of the country against eachother.

Pre roman empire we had a mix of Gaulish and Germanic tribes. We are culturally catholic, we were part of the Roman Empire, then during medieval times mostly part of France, then we were part of the Habsburg empire (first under Spanish rule, then Austrian) while the Netherlands was its own independent kingdom. We were only really one for 100 years during the late medieval era as the Habsburg Netherlands and from 1815-1830.
