There's really no defending offside rules as they exist today. All you can say is that they were clearly designed for a time where you didn't have technology that enabled you determine offside to milimetric precision and so only offsides where the attacker actually had an unfair advantage were called. But now you call offsides where the attacker has their toe 1cm offside because nobody ever establised a minimum length below which you don't call an offside so now we're stuck with a rule that blows the whistle on an "unfair advantage" that clearly makes no sense.
