The main problem most Americans have with soccer in my experience is how much single incidents can impact the game. Three good saves or lucky bounces are the difference between a draw and a blowout, whereas in American sports (baseball, basketball, football) you get some insane high leverage moments down the stretch of close games but the teams have to actually be competitive with each other for those moments to be decisive.It's a jarring adjustment to go from one to the other, and the low density of impactful events means that so many brilliant plays are ultimately meaningless. Whereas in American football every single play (or at least every first down) alters the game even if it only affects stuff like field position, every single interception or turnover is a massive deal, etc. Or in baseball every last out matters so a nice strikeout or diving catch feels like it has real importance.
