How can a man go through life following only one sport?

Even the Ancient Greeks had over a dozen sports of interest.

Depends on what you mean by "following", I guess. Lots of people are casual about a few sports, others don't follow any
Personally, I agree that it's nice to keep up with multiple sports. Although it's fairly normal to have one main interest, I'd say

I would say following entails having at least one player or team who you watch if they are in big events (or the biggest event they get to) and ideally at least one player or team you root against

So for instance if you watch Sinner or Alcaraz or Zverev when they're in grand slams I count this as following Tennis, albeit as a casual

Fair definition. Makes sense. Casuals counting as people who follow sports is certainly just, although you obviously have to make a distinction between them and diehards.
However
>ideally at least one player or team you root against
Maybe this is another definition thing. Why would I care about that? Personally, I have some teams/athletes I dislike, but I won't actually follow them for hatewatch reasons, let alone for something else. And it's totally secondary at best compared to my interest in >my club. If anything, I tend to weigh my dislikes based on what suits my club most. Beyond that, it's just a pure vibe, nothing more

In America we love to root for the underdog and against the favorite (unless the favorite is your team), so it feels weird for someone to watch a sport and not have a team/player they also want to lose.

Is it not also true there? Don't most people want Buyern to lose regardless of who wins?
>>
Not only do I only follow one sport, but I only follow it for a month or two once every two years

Plato's cave loses its luster when you realize Plato had all sorts of cooky unfounded shadow play beliefs.

Oh, yes, surely. But to me, that is partially also interest-based. All in all, my main focus is and will always be my club. But I also want the best for German football, and so I want the league to be more balanced. Bayern losing is good in general because of what you've described and because of how insufferable many people affiliated with Bayern are, but to me, your statement seemed too proactive. I won't go out of my way to root against Bayern. And when Bayern has to win against an opponent for my club to profit (be it avoiding relegation or reaching the CL), I can live with them winning, even though I prefer them losing and not winning the the German championship and the DFB Cup in general
I just don't define fanhood along the lines of disliking someone. Sympathies for underdogs are something basically separate and more innate to me, something that does not have to be mentioned

>would say following entails having at least one player or team who you watch if they are in big events (or the biggest event they get to) and ideally at least one player or team you root against
thats tribalism

I wonder if ancient Greeks had this same discussion
>Palodalekes only cares for the discus!
>what a straight!

they came together to play all sports at the olympics though, so it would be a lot harder to only follow one sport

No it's because you're effeminate and care about the pageantry and neurotransmitter rushes, not the actual sports

>In the ancient Greek world, popular ball games like phaininda were notoriously brutal, involving physical tackles and collisions. In The Republic and Laws, Plato warns against the physical dangers of becoming overly violent or obsessed with winning any physical or competitive sport, advocating instead for balancing athleticism with philosophy and moderation.
