You have to look at US history and place names as though whatever is west of them is almost completely uninhabited wilderness. It's Kansas City, Missouri because it's the last piece of civilization as you enter the wild frontier territory of Kansas. Missouri became a state in 1821 and Kansas was 40 years later in 1861.
