>>156688366
They were singing the praises of the naadam horse winners, the wrestling is back on now
>>

Beautiful country btw

Really? Giving the kid a back pack? Come on now.

The kids who compete are 7 to 11 years old, they get a cash prize and have all their school supplies paid for. Remember that this is a third world country.

They honour the 5 best and the 5 worst lol, if i remember correctly
>>
>>156689295
The children jockeys are nine years old, so their prizes are school supplies. The horse trainers and parents get other prizes like cars or apartments. Depends on the sponsors. Mongolia isn't completely pozzed by capitalism (yet).

The kids also get jockey suits and fancy hats.
>>
>>156689474
hats do appear to be an important part of this culture
>>
>>156689506
The judges have chevrons on the tails of their hats that indicate their judge rank.
>>

Seems a bit weird to tie up their stomachs like they're ham no?
>>
So one guy gave the other a walkover because they're from the same town and he'd already won the naadam four times while the other was doing his first state competing.

Very nice that they allow them to simply surrender before the match. Not poisoned by betting
>>
>guy just gave up his position to the newcomer

This would never happen in divegrass
>>

The rope and clothes are for grip. You win if the other touch their knee, elbow, shoulder or head to the ground. That silly 90 degree bridge is a crazy test of strength. Matches last forever until someone wins, they can do this for hours (and do actually)
>>
Out of Bear, Lion, and Elephant, there will be a new champion this year.

Mongolian facts I have skillfully copy and pasted from the wiki
>With a population of 3.5 million, Mongolia is the world's most sparsely populated sovereign state, excluding partially unrecognized Western Sahara.
>By the early 20th century, almost one-third of the adult male population were Buddhist monks.
>Approximately 30% of the population is nomadic or semi-nomadic
>There are 82,422 Shamanists in Mongolia
>>
>>156688091
how much is a beer and a meal in a mongolian inn/bar?
looks comfy btw
>>
>>156690145
>By the early 20th century, almost one-third of the adult male population were Buddhist monks.

The soviet massacred the monks, razed almost every temple and burned all holy texts. The mongolian state now gives women who birth 4 children a state award (and I believe some sort of pension) and mine two years of maternity leave for each child.

>Approximately 30% of the population is nomadic or semi-nomadic
Traffic in Ulaanbataar is awful. Tons of capitalismblocks being built as the nomads abandon their lifestyle despite the fact that they have cheap Chinese solar panels and access to Starlink... sad!

>>156690208
25k MNT for a meal (40k if you want to be fancy) 10k for an overpriced beer (it's like half the price if you're not in a tourist camp). 3.5k MNT=1 USD.

The judges are all former wrestlers too btw.
>>
>bull rush for the win

Just two guys left
>>
>>156690264
Brutal stuff. Apparently the ruling party of the time (then a one party state) are back in government?
>>156690303
I read a bit about the pollution in Ulanbaataar. Also I now know what a zud is and it sounds horrible.
>The annual average temperature in Ulaanbaatar is −1.3 °C (29.7 °F), making it the world's coldest capital city.
>>

Cold weather? Hard people
>>
finals on now
>>
Just found out that there's a person singing the whole time- they switch now and then but over ten hours of chanting and not using a recording... The West would never

All of this is way more hype than I'd ever expect. We watched a local one in person yesterday and it's surprising how engaging it is
>>
The new 26th champion is from Selenge Province!
>>
This is sovl overload
