My headcannon is because Mbappe and Cherki (maybe others too) boasted about "being able to play dirty too" after the match. You can't just say that and expect your yellows to vanish. Same reason why they put an entire staff of argentinian refs in the next match and the main ref being known for handing out yellows like a pedo hands out candy to kids
