> By this measure soccer is the most random major sport there is. The favorite fails to win 45 per cent of the time. That’s higher than baseball (44.1 per cent), hockey (41.4 per cent), basketball (36.5 per cent), and football (36.4 per cent). Compare that to tennis, where over five sets the favorite loses only about 21 per cent of the time. In other words, play long enough and skill wins out. In an average ninety-minute soccer match, the better team is only slightly more likely to win than the better player is in a single hand of poker. Both are basically coin flips.
> The main thing that drives the randomness is low event count. A basketball game, for example, has around a hundred possessions per team. A tennis match has hundreds of points. But a soccer match can turn on a single shot hitting the crossbar, one bad call, or a ball bouncing off someone’s shin. There's simply not enough scoring for skill to drown out luck.
>>
> You saw it this month. Spain, European champions, ninety times the population, controlled the ball for 70 per cent of the first half and took twenty-seven shots at Cape Verde, who were playing in their first World Cup ever, and could not score once. Cape Verde, a nation the size of Guilford County, North Carolina, then drew all three of their group games and advanced to the knockout round. If this were a one-off, it’d be a great underdog story.
> But it happens all the time. In 2018, Iceland, population 350 000, tied Argentina. If tennis worked this way, nobody would ever win more than one Grand Slam, and there’d be a new group of people you’d never heard of in the quarterfinals every time. Which is to say, with soccer, most of what you’re watching is luck. It’s like watching professional roulette on television.

stopped reading, a amerimutt's opinion does not matter.

> But the worst part, the thing that should disqualify soccer as a sport at all, is that a huge share of games end in a tie. Nobody wins. It’s the most anti-competitive outcome in sports—two hours of intense effort that fails to produce a winner—and in soccer it’s not a fluke, it’s routine. More than a quarter of World Cup matches end in a draw, and in some leagues it approaches forty per cent. Imagine a movie that just stops at ninety minutes, wherever the plot happens to be—sometimes at the ending, sometimes not—because that’s the rule.
> Most matches are decided by a single goal, and many by none at all. One goal is the whole game. And goals almost never come (only about one shot in ten finds the net), and the team that scores first wins two-thirds of the time. Put these statistics together and the incentives are perverse. Giving up a goal is catastrophic, and the chance of scoring isn’t worth the risk of getting caught upfield when the other team counterattacks. So from the opening whistle the smart play isn’t to attack—it’s to play not to lose. Hold your chanc

> But that's why it's so tragic. Soccer takes the largest, most brutally filtered athletic talent pool on earth and wastes it by paying players millions of dollars to jog around in circles for ninety minutes and try to score once with their feet. Soccer was never designed to be watched. It just grew: cheap, simple, fun to play, and carried around the globe by an empire that owned a quarter of it. By the time anyone thought to ask whether it was fun to watch, it was already everywhere.
> Soccer's rules were written down in England in 1863, before any of the good sports existed. By the time someone built a game where you could use your hands, where scoring was common and luck was rare, soccer already had a half-century head start and most of the world's children. It isn't popular because it's the best. It's popular because it got there first.

>>
>>157053982

I agree that on a per match basis, there can be a lot of luck involved in football, and it's probably the ballsport where the worst team can eek out a result most often, but claiming that it's all luck is peak lolmurrica mentality. Only 8 teams have ever won the WC in 23 editions. Mutt sports are much more 'luck' based in terms of winners.
>>
>>157053976
In any given soccer match only about 7 minutes or so actually matters. Spain had over 900 passes. Maybe 150 of them or so actually improved field position and led to a sequence that could maybe lead to a shot on goal

Note how im not saying only shots on goal matter. It’s more like there’s so many sequences that don’t even advance field position, where everyone just constantly farts around and resets mid field over and over.

It’s so fucking boring. No wonder nfl is growing overseas. It dramatically reduces the issue of “meaningless plays”. Even a really garbage sequence of one first down into punt at least advanced the field position. If the spain Argentina game was the equivalent in American football, it would’ve been something like an 18-0 blowout. Sure they didn’t get any touchdowns but simply by outplaying the opponents they were able to get a large amount of field goals. Then we would have been spared a bunch of wasted extra time.

Yeah that’s how the sport is actually played in real life, when you played with your mates you didn’t have some incel on the sidelines acting as a ref. Offsides should only be enforced by blatant cherry picking, 10m offsides
>>
>>157055360
>Just use a grid, that’s where we got it from mate, if two players are in the same grid block it’s not offsides and really easy to verify

This is irrelevant. Every player also trains to dive and flop to take advantage of shitty rules. Your sport does not functionally work because you guys have completely lost on the plot.

From a non-American perspective, the high scoring of American sports devalues each individual score/goal and makes the play feel repetitive. If you binge on sugary food and masturbate five times a day, you get desensitised. That's what American sports is, where matches finish 119-95. On the other hand, the winning goal in a 2-1 or a 3-2 win in football/soccer feels amazing because it counts for a lot and there's often been a lot of tense build-up beforehand. Casuals who only follow a sport every four years obviously can't appreciate the tactics and other subtle elements either. That goes for any sport, of course.

Not really, most scoring opportunities are frantic and happen quickly. Farting around mid field passing 200 times isn’t build up. Build up is slowly advancing on a real football field, having to convert several third or fourths downs is tense, not gay nothingburger shit

>muh win rate
If American sports had ties in regulation instead of overtime in the regular season you'd see a lot more favorite teams fail to win. Even with that if he'd ever followed a title race in a top European league he'd know that not dropping points against shitters is usually what separates the league winner from the other contenders.

>Soccer is all luck
Semifinals of the WC were ranked 1,2,3,4 in the world before the tournament. The winners only conceded once (against a top 10 team chasing a lead) and were never behind at any point in the whole tournament. American postseasons are almost never this deterministic, usually one of the #1 seeds or division/conference winners goes out early even in sports with multi game series to sand out the randomness of any one game.

>Muh games decided by 1 goal
How many games in the non boring American sports (no basketball) are decided by 1 score (or effectively so, like a 2 goal hockey game where the last goal was on an empty net)? Are those more boring games to watch than a 70-3 blowout where the winning team puts out walk-ons halfway through the game? Will anyone seriously tell me that they want the sports they watch to have more games like Germany-Curacao and fewer like England-Mexico?

>Draws are anti-competitive
Anti competitive is arbitrarily forcing a winner in a game where neither team pulled out a win. Give me a tied league game any day over pretending that the team that did better in a shootout or that one the coin toss and made an 90+% field goal is the real winner.

There's real shit to complain about with soccer but every world cup there's a flood of American writers who flop their circumcized dicks out on the table and say the dumbest most ignorant bullshit about the world's favorite game to boost their engagement

Watching a qb pass or throw the ball to one-dimensional Quilltylun isn't exactly exciting, and to borrow the playbook of this thread's author, it's the equivalent of a movie forcing a fight sequence every other scene, it loses any impact. But I'm guessing this is what americans are trained for, constant stimulation (with commercial breaks) or else they'll lose interest. In fact all gridiron football players are one-dimensional.

>passing 200 times isn’t build up
I'm assuming you're talking about Spain's tiki-taka tactic? It's the equivalent of a real-life chess match, Spain slowly dissecting and breaking apart their opponents, mindbreaking them over how they never ever get possession. It's sophistication that you twats will never get.
>>
I don't know what statistics he's using but it's just blatantly false. I've watched hockey and football for almost 30 years and there are way more upsets in hockey than football.
>>
>a small handful of upsets happened in a 100 game tournament (where the 4 highest ranked teams all made the semifinal) and this proves football is too random according to this random percentage I pulled out of my ass

Only 8 teams have won the world cup for a reason. Football has very low variance compared to ice hockey. It's comparable to basketball or American football in the likelihood of the better team to win.
>>
>>157054027
>Nobody cares if you like football or not
I care. This World Cup has shown exactly what would happen to football if Americans started liking it.
>>
The worst part of this world cup, as someone who grew up watching extremely physical, entertaining teams who fouled often and trash talked and all that other fun stuff, was all the retards bitching and whining over soft ass fouls and getting personally offended when players ran their mouths. Where did all these fucking crybabies come from? I felt like I was on reddit.
>>
>>157056055
The high of a winning goal in soccer could never match the highs of a winning score in any of the four North American sports because you will never know the emotions of going directly from losing to winning. Or in the case of hockey, knowing that the overtime goal is the absolute end.
>>
>>157058505
Retard. Comebacks and last second goals happened dozens of times just in the world cup.

>VARgentina gets btfo
categorically because of that fact alone this WC was a wild success
>>
> The main thing that drives the randomness is low event count. A basketball game, for example, has around a hundred possessions per team. A tennis match has hundreds of points.
yeah and thats why you never need to watch anything but the last quarter of every basketball game and it sucks
>>
>>157058628
It's not even true when it comes to football. In hockey it's true that you get low scoring games decided by luck fairly often. But in football, despite the low event count, generally the better teams find a way to win.
>>
>>157053976
> NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I NEED TO SEE BBCS SCORING THOUSANDS OF POINTS PER GAME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>
>>157058523
No matter how crazy the comeback, you *have* to tie first. You’ll never be in a position where you can completely vault over that status. Being on the knife's edge between winning and losing is far different than between losing and tying or tying and winning. And as for last second goals, you can never tell for certain what the actual last second is thanks to that fucky timekeeping of theirs.
>>
>>157058720
Baseball and american football and basketball all bore me and I haven't watched them in years so I'll concede that I can't make a fair comparison
>>
>>157053976
soccer being more random than gridiron is surprising to me - gridiron feels like a very chaotic sport where "anything can happen on any given sunday", and yet it's actually more likely to pick the favorite than soccer?
the people who designed gridiron fucking cooked
>>
>"footie is a random sport where patterns can be randomly broken and there are no set-in-stone fixtures"
Not really? Cabo Verde pulled together to have a good defence against teams that we saw were struggling to score. Argentina's best scoreline was 3 - 0 against Algeria. Every other game even when teams opened up, they struggled.
Spain were the exact same, they struggled with Portugal and in the games were they had 1 player advantage they only got 1 goal.

This was a WC where a majority of teams were playing incredibly defensively. Arsenal won the PL, PSG and Arsenal played a game with 4 total shots on target in the champion's league, Inter Milan won the Italian league.
European football has currently locked into defensive setpiece play which results in playing for fouls and playing for luck. That said, the results this WC were not unusual if you've been paying attention to Africa, European leagues and Copa.
>>
>>157054279
The parity should be legitimate and not through dragging the game until everyone is tired and making mistakes.
>>
>>157054870
>Mutt sports are much more 'luck' based in terms of winners.
Not really. He shows the numbers in the article.

The luck in US sports is the draft system. The games themselves aren't more luck based then soccer.
>>
Why are americans obsessed with football? Just don't watch it nigger
>>
>>157053976
I hope America never gets to host a WC again. Conspiracy theories, celebrity larpers, people watching the game from TikTok reels and openly admitting they never watched a full game but giving their dumb takes anyway, the orange retard breaking tradition and touching the cup, cooling breaks, halftime shows, sorry Burgerbros I hope WCs happen on timezones far away from yours in the future.

There were some kino football moments but all the shit around it ruined the mood.

Americans are right. Like me, most of you only watch a handful of important matches like WC or champions league knockout games. I gave up on watching leagues more than a decade ago. It was just boring to me. 90 minutes of nothing.
>>
>>157060040
Ah plus 15 minutes break time, close to 2 hours of pure slurpfest.
>>
what is it about this sport that causes so many americans to insist it needs to be fixed and they are the ones to do it? only using your feet is one of the best parts if anything headers should be banned to keep the ball on the ground more, but this would also reduce the goal count which is probably unacceptable to some.

It allows the players to play harder, change up tactics if need be and brings in more money for the game.

What parity? There already isn't any. Doesn't matter if it's parking the bus, tiki-taka, whatever gay strategy teams use to stall out the clock and prevent the game from happening like a neckbeard at a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament, it's still the same few countries winning internationally and the same few teams winning domestically forever. It's divorced from reality to complain that soccer is too random and gives underdogs too many chances. It's literally the stalest, most repetitive sport in the world.

This is just a long winded way to describe the nature of a poisson distribution for games with low score counts.
If the English national team were serious about winning (sadly not the case) then they would understand that the best way to win is to score more goals, even if you let in more goals. If you average a goal differential of 1 against a team, you could win anywhere between 1-0 and 10-9. If you play offensively, trying to get 10 goals, risking giving up 9, you are more likely to win the game than trying for a 1-0 victory. This is a mathematical fact as shown by the poisson distribution and is true for any sport.
tldr: the shirtless, obese englishman yelling "score some facking goals" has a more sound strategy than Suckgate and Tushits.

Although it's been pretty one-sided the last couple of decades, the world cup has historically been a contest between European and South American nations. North America is neutral ground, and therefore should be hosts for all World Cups. We will agree not to rig one for ourselves more than once every 50 years. But that is how it should be.
