Back in the day half the pro peloton was the equivalent of amateur club riders today. They let some shitters go in the break, the peloton rode real easy, then there was a big burn up at the end. Now they ride 50km/h every day in the first 2 hours just to establish the break. Then catching them is not easy because the break are actually strong riders doing 400W all day.
