It's a leftover from the Cold War. No joke. Both the USA and the USSR (as well as their closely allied states in the latter case) invested heavily in the sports with the most Olympic medals to win (rather than those that they already had an organic public interest in or were actually good at), That meant that suddenly stuff like gymnastics, figure skating and swimming in particular became, alomost out of nowhere, extremely hard-fought competitions. And of course, doping and rigging became commonplace.
The US and Russia never let go of those sports once the Cold War was over. Then again, we all know they never let go of their Cold War rivalry either.

None of these even come close to caring about these sports as the US and Russia. There's a bit of a swimming tradition in Europe, but that's about it.
Germany did inherit the the figure skating tradition and training structures from the GDR when that one got annexed. But they've since pivoted to couples performances rather than using young teens for a plethora of medals from separate competitions.

Legit nobody cares, all major sports that are actually worth watching and have a somewhat significant cultural impact have their own world cups or leagues as the premier event of their sports, only small irrelevant sports that you would never care to watch outside olympics or if your country was not playing treat olympics as somewhat of a significant event, but even then these small sports also have thousands of other minor competitions and most of the world records are made outside the olympics, proving that the quality of competition is about the same..
Olympics used to be a big deal years ago when big countries used the olympics as a way to whitewash its image or just promote its ideology in general, but the new gay faggots just ban any country or any sport that goes against the hegemony of JewSA so its basically irrelevant now.

Ironically enough, pretty much ALL Olympic sports have an actual world championship event, even "athletics" have a shared biennial championship. Which made sense, since the Olypic Games were originally meant for amateurs, while the world championships obviously were exclusively for professional athletes.
But when the Olympic competitions got more public interest than those specialized events, pro athletes started complaining and demanded that they be allowed to compete. So now we basically have this complete redundancy. And to this day no one cares about those sports outside the Olympics.
