Capital cities of the big five leagues:London= Multiple big clubs Paris=PSGRome=Roma The highest Berlin club in Germany is Union Berlin which is a pretty mid club and haven't even been top flight for a lot of their history.
>>157471089Because west Berlin was isolated and Ossi clubs couldn't adopt after reunification
>>157471089I forgot to type Madrid=real madrid.
east is poorgerman league isn't hyper-commercialized and doesn't have as much global presence, which means less money.
>>157471089City was split in half until the 90’s
What's a bigger city in the United States? New York City or Washington D.C.?Being the capital isnt everything.
>>157471089because football grew out of industrial cities and not bourgeois captials
>>157471174new worlders need not apply
>>157471089>London= Multiple big clubsNeeded foreign gas money to win a champions league, which only happened less than 15 years ago>Paris=PSGNeeded foreign oil money to win a Champions league, which only happened less than two years ago>Rome=RomaGenoa tier. Turin, Milan and even Napoli are betterBerlin is not alone. The important capitals of 100 years ago are not that good in football. Although Berlin is alone in being a burden to the country of which is capital
>>157471089Hmmm I wonder what the difference between Berlin and other big capitals is. Perhaps i should purchase a history book focusing on post WW2. Hmmm.
>which is a pretty mid club and haven't even been top flight for a lot of their history. So are Roma, every team in London expect Chelsea, and PSG was nothing before Luis Enrique.
>>157471089>London= Multiple big clubs>Paris=PSGAnd what do Chelsea and PSG have that German clubs don't? Billionaire owners.
>>157471089Berlin was divided into east and west for the longest time. It was also not the capital of the former West Germany in which much of the Bundesliga became a thing in the late 20th Century. That was Bonn. As Berlin was also stranded in the middle of East Germany it was not the most lucrative or desirable place to play or there was much of a focus on sports as maintaining the area under the democratic west took presidence. The only real clubs were on the East side which promptly collapsed once unification happened and they had to compete on their own financially which favoured the old factory clubs. Union was essentially an amateur team up until the last few decades and has opportunistically slid in to pick up the market once Hertha fell apart (again).
>>157472319BayernwinslolThe 50+1 model is ruining your league and holding back other teams from seriously competing other than the odd fluke season like Stuttgart and Neverkusen.
>>157471089Berlin wasn’t the capital of West Germany >>157472332Why is Bonn so shit at football?
>>157472473>Why is Bonn so shit at football? They're all Köln fans
>>157472351Ligue 1 has no 50+1 yet only PSG keeps winning.
Just look at the whole of East Germany. Communism is a lifelong cancer.
>>157472351Nein means Nein.
>>157472351Hertha BSC is a prime example for why we should continue blocking all investors from entering our leagues
>>157471089Good question. There used to be many notable Berlin clubs in the early days: Hertha, Union, Borussia, Viktoria, etc. However, they ended up keeping each other small while other cities came to be dominated by single clubs that therefore grew quickly. This could have been prevented by a dominant Berlin club emerging sooner, I guessThe war and the Cold War divide probably play a big role. The city just wasn't a good place for investment, competition sufferedAfter the Wende, there was a big push. My dad told me he (and others) assumed Hertha BSC would become a top club now. But they kinda couldn't handle the money. Hertha is known for being a chaotic club, bad with money, high in pressure. Union Berlin is a bit of a newcomer when it comes to Bundesliga presence, they still have structural disadvantagesEveryone else has been banished to dwarf status since the Bundesliga got founded and hogged most of the money and attention, replacing the numerous regional leagues more Berlin clubs could shine in>>157471154It makes revenue on par with the Spanish league despite having 306 instead of 380 games
>>157471089>franceMost centralized country, dominant capital>spainUnited a long time ago but still remembers their origins so there is a challenger to the dominant capital>italyUnited recently but of relatively large constituents. Non-capital teams dominate while the capital is still top flight>germanyUnited 150 years ago and then was divided again for 45 years. Many constituents of relatively small size. Non-capital teams dominate, capital teams are non-existent.>ingerlandSpecial case since the sport originated there
>>157471161then it means they should have had at least 2 strong teams
>>157477525That very much means the opposite.West-Berlin was isolated from the rest of West-Germany. Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg wad more weight in West-Germany than Berlin had in many way, especially in football. The clubs in East-Berlin and in East-Germany were a lot worse overall. It's not just Berlin, the former East-German regions do not have top level clubs to this day. A lot of cities are still lagging behind economically too. There is an argument to be made that Germany does have several "capital clubs" like there is in Spain or Italy. But that's not in Berlin. It's in Munich with Bayern and 1860 (though the latter has not been doing well for a while). It's in Hamburg with HSV and Saint Pauli. It's in Dusseldorf with Borussia and Schalke.
>>157471174Berlin IS the biggest city in Germany, though not nearly as large as Paris or London.
>>157471089Surely Hertha BSC the biggest club in Berlin
>>157471089Scotlands biggest clubs are Rangers and Celtic, both from Glasgow the country’s soccer capital (SFA are based there and the National team play in Glasgow as well). Although of course Glasgow is bigger than Edinburgh and more considered more working class.Ireland pre-partition had Belfast as the main soccer centre as well with the IFA based there and all the big clubs. Hence the split when partition occurred but not in Rugby Union. Took a long time for the London clubs to be “big” though even if the FA was founded in London southern clubs were behind northern ones for the first 30+ years before Arsenal became hugely successful in the 30s. Pre-ww2 the most successful clubs in England were Villa and Sunderland. And even with the success of London clubs the north still has Manchester and Liverpool whose clubs have dominated the league since the 70s. Spurs had had a fair bit of cup success but didn’t win the league until 51 and only became a seriously “big” in the 60s. Chelsea won their first league title in the 50s but remained a yo-yo club until the formation of the Premiership; it was only this century that they’ve been one of the “biggest” clubs in the country. West Ham have always LARPed but won mostly fuck-all. All the rest of the London clubs (Fulham, QPR, Orient, Millwall, Charlton, Palace, Brentford) are tinpot despite the money that has over the past few decades poured in.
