Are they rigging matches to make them look interesting and thus up their popularity again?
They've had some bangers this season so far
>>
Nah.
The defenses are just trash. Can't believe I'm living through a serie a with trash defense.

Serie A is a product not designed for gaijins, just stick to the premier league and fuck off

The parity at the top of Serie A is an astroturfed feature designed to make the league appear balanced and exciting, with the sole purpose of attracting foreigners not interested in sport but only in cheap entertainment.
Specifically, the mission in recent years has been to recalibrate the yardsticks at stake and 'redistribute' national titles and league positions based on practical needs to revive the fortunes of Serie A after the Juventus decade, considered terribly damaging to the reputation of FIGC and Lega Serie A: you have Inter and Roma who are unsustainable cesspits of debt to be assisted in every way possible (the latest case being the investigation into match-fixing to favour Inter, with the complicity of top officials in the football federation and refereeing hierarchy), Napoli has infiltrated the control rooms of institutions (in addition, their fans have openly threatened referees who did not favour the team), and then there are clubs such as Milan, which in the post-Berlusconi era needed to clean up its debts through front men. The only respectable teams that have managed to achieve something positive outside of the league, such as Atalanta, must nevertheless bow their heads to such state interest.
In all this, the introduction of VAR in Serie A has been crucial, with its ever-changing protocol of capricious and deliberately vague rules enforced at a whim allowing the course of matches to be altered according to the season's script.
In this case, the script for this season and the next few tells us that, despite the artificial parity, the top places in the league table and the trophies will ultimately be shared out amongst Inter (whose owners are doing everything they can to profit from the stadium in Milan, which was sold off for a ridiculously low price thanks to lobbying by Inter executives), Roma (the new head of the federation is an avowed supporter of the club) and Napoli.
If you value your intelligence, don't bother with Serie A.
