Why don't the A's just keep playing in Oakland until the Vegas stadium is done and just sign a year by year lease? What's the point in playing in some tiny venue in a different city instead?
>>
Because their lease on the Coliseum expired and John Fisher severed all ties with Oakland beforehand
>>
Oakland is that shitty anon.
>>
>>157844163
The A's are known for moving, it's their thing. this is like their 5th relocation
>>
>>157844220
A's in Green Bay when?
>>
>>157844355
After Rapid City
>>
>>157844197
more like your attitude is shitty
>>
>>157844163
The acrimony between the A's ownership and Oakland left out any possibility for a year to year lease to be signed. Playing at minor league fields is the next best option
>>
>>157844197
yes, but they still had fans coming out to the ballpark, AND the city had already greenlit the waterfront park
>>
Oakland is petty.
This is a city that last all of its sports teams in a decade.
Let that sink in.
>>
>>157844163
Our local team announcers refer to them as Sacramento. MLB officially just calls them the Athletics. Oakland is not a major league city in any sport. It's a dump.
>>
>>157844993
>the city had already greenlit the waterfront park

bull shit
>>
It's funny how people tie economy and prestige to having sports franchises in this country when quite often the best thing that can possibly happen to your city is for the NHL and/or NBA team to leave. Oakland Arena is now a goldmine ever since the Warriors left for being able to host a lot more concerts and events where the city actually gets to keep the money rather than entities that only pay a pathetic token rent and hoard everything else.
>>
>>157844163
they pissed off everyone in Oakland to the point where no one in city government wants to work with them and they'd struggle to even get people in the area to buy tickets
>>157844220
There's a good chance Vegas fails, too. Crowded small market, summer sport best enjoyed outdoors (I know they have a retractable roof, but if they're depending on tourists), 81 home dates to fill.
>>
>>157844163
Oakland is a corrupt city run by grifters. They own the stadium and the lease was up. The A's had a regional sports cable tv deal that was still valid if they played in Sacramento which is why they went there instead of somewhere else.

The owner is a piece of garbage like 90% of owners but the A's left Oakland because Oakland drove them out, not because of the owner.
>>
>>157844993
>AND the city had already greenlit the waterfront park
you got played. The City of Oakland ran a PR campaign to make sure people didn't blame them. The very short version of the stadium plan was Oakland was only willing to let the A's do it if they paid nearly a billion dollars in grift for the privilege. No really.

>There's a good chance Vegas fails, too
I doubt it. The key to success for a new team in a market is to be exciting and successful. They will be in a nice new stadium (already half built) and they have the most exciting young team imaginable and they're all under team control/contract through the relocation.

The first year in Vegas will have the A's in a new stadium, an exclusive market for the first time in many decades, and a great, fun team. They're going to do awesome I think.

People forget that the A's/Giants shared the SFBay market well for the first few decades but after the Giants were sold in the mid-90's and started work on their new stadium that ownership was on a mission to wreck the A's and drive them out of town. That is an underrated backstory of the entire A's stadium saga which has gone on since the 90's under three ownership groups not just the current one. The Giants (and MLB) wanted to make a super team with a huge market to itself and getting the A's out of town/knocking them down was important. The A's were the better team with a better stadium for decades.

I'm not a big fan of Las Vegas in general but I look forward to the A's having their own market without a hostile competitor for the first time in 30 years. I primarily blame the Giants for pushing the A's out of the Sf Bay.
>>
>>157847201
They really think Vegas will succeed because NHL succeeded (not noticing them being massively successful on-ice upon launch and being the only pro team in town for locals to accept and can fill a 18k stadium)
Vegas is going to soon have all four major sport league teams and they will not have the consistent population and support for all of them. NBA and MLB will struggle the most being late but this owner being so cheap is going to make them the first to fail. Vegas went from untapped market to oversaturated
>>
>>157847201
Vegas should be a success, the problem is they're ground zero for away fan takeovers. Can be abated if they're good by then.
>>
>>157849692
People underestimate the size of Las Vegas metro as a city of locals. It's around 3 million which is enough to support major sports franchises. Vegas has been transitioning into an urban identity of its own for the last twenty years and many outsiders still see it is primarily a vacation destination. Road fans are a part of the sports equation there but I think that is mostly on a problem with football where there are only 8 or 9 games. With baseball you're talking 81 home games which is when locals matter more. Also baseball fans like having road team fans there provided they're not the entire audience. I doubt every Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers series in Vegas will be completely out of towners.

Florida is a bad comparison but it's what most of you are thinking of when you write off the Vegas market. The dynamics are different and locals will largely switch allegiance to the local team provided it acts locally. So far the A's are doing the right things to build that local fanbase. The series they played in Vegas this season went extremely well.

>team owners shouldn't pay for their own stadiums
>>
>>157849949
In the case of Oakland the team was going to pay for the stadium but Oakland also wanted them to pay for a bunch of other shit that had nothing to do with the stadium. They basically wanted "gentrification reparations" and no I'm not joking. That's why none of the ownership groups got it done. The jew owners are paying for the stadium in Vegas themselves right now by the way. The City/County have chipped in like 1/5th.

People underestimate the East Bay market plus its more inland extremities as well, which make twice the size of the Vegas market. That’s why they're playing in Sacramento right now instead of going straight to the Vegas minor league park, to still squeeze the last drops they can get out of an objectively better TV market before sealing their fate. In fact, the ones who get the most shafted out of this entire deal are the people of Reno, the only place in Nevada that likely had organic A's fans. Now the only true fans in the state are paying taxes to send their team twice as far away from them.
>>
>>157849969
they were issued $750 million in bonds backed by the county, the largest public subsidy ever granted for a stadium in us history.
>>
>>157849850
The difference is supporting a major sports team, maybe even two, vs all four.
Vegas was underrepresented for years and can support teams. That is seen how widely successful Golden Knights have been
However the market is too small to support all four. The Vegas media market is 40th in the country, just behind West Palm Beach which is part of Miami anyway. The smallest media market to have all four is Miami itself at 18th, and again they have the further South Florida market to gain support. Vegas is also splintered by existing alliances to other teams.
It is easier when they can focus on NHL and some 9 NFL games a year. When all four are soon playing we will see which will struggle. A media market that size can’t support all four to target levels for a major sports league
>>
>>157849982
Take a look at how awesome they were in Philadelphia the decade before moving
>>
>>157850019
>That’s why they're playing in Sacramento right now instead of going straight to the Vegas minor league park,
Incorrect. As I mention above it is because the cable TV deal was still valid if they played in Sac but not Vegas. That's also why they don't officially use the 'Sacramento' name. If not for the TV deal issue I"m 100% sure they'd be playing in Vegas.

>>157850040
>bonds backed by the county
such things are complex and you are trying to simplify them. Public funding for stadiums is not a simple black or white matter. The important point is that the A's themselves are on the hook for a huge amount of money to build in Vegas. It's not a free ride by any stretch. They didn't move because some city gave them a free stadium. They moved because Oakland made it impossible to get a new ballpark for the last 25 years.
>>
They won't. The Raiders fanbase is clearly in LA as evident by yesterday's annual takeover of SoFi stadium. If the Raiders can be good they will have all those California fans coming to Vegas more often. However NBA and NHL is different. The only time Vegas will have a full house for NBA is when the Lakers or Warriors (pre-Curry retirement) come to town.
>>
>>157850137
>media market
As far as I know the TV market for the Vegas A's has not yet been publicized. MLB blackout rules really determine the tv market fanbase for a team. The A's will also retain a significant number of fans from Northern California (like me). They're not going to switch to the hated Giants. Most of us either aren't from Oakland and don't care if they play there or understand why the team left after watching Oakland shit the bed. There is a very vocal redit beard crowd who likes to make whining about the A's their personality but everyone rightfully sees them as pathetic losers who should get over it.

Winning is what matters most for building a fanbase and the A's are going to be winning from the first season in LV. Again, Florida comparisons are not at all valid. You don't seem to understand the Florida population dynamics as compared to Las Vegas.
>>
>>157850238
The Raiders fanbase is all over the southwestern quarter of the country. They could take over any stadium from San Antonio to Sacramento. The problem for the Chargers is that they have no identity in LA. Honestly I think the plan was to park them there until SD got a stadium together and then move them back. The Raiders have sucked bad since going to LV which is why they've yet to adopt that new identity. This year appears to have changed that. I'm not a Raiders fan so they can fuck off but the future is looking bright for them finally.
>>
>>157850270
>as far as I know the TV market for the Vegas A's has not yet been publicized
Should be Nevada and Utah. Maybe parts of Arizona and California
Also I switched to being a Padres fan last year but that's because I work in San Diego
>>
https://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets

Vegas tv market is small. Despite having a metro population of 2 million, LV is only the 42nd largest tv market in the US.

Streaming is different.
>>
>>157850708
MLB markets are not the same as whatever advertising-based "market" list you are using. What matters is blackouts and what is shown on air locally. Will A's games be "local" in Tahoe on the California side, or Giants? Questions like that are TBD as far as I know. The A's have a legacy fanbase of millions in Northern California and MLB will probably want to keep at least some of that watching the A's.
>>
Better yet, why didn't they relocate to Sacramento, where they actually have a following and some fans won't have to travel very far to a new ballpark. Instead it's a city where there's already like 5-15 teams with more fans than them
>>
>>157850270
>Again, Florida comparisons are not at all valid. >You don't seem to understand the Florida population dynamics as compared to Las Vegas.
Uhhh it's totally different than in Florida
"Why?"
Well uhhh... the dynamics... of the population... uh of Florida
>>
>>157844993
>yes, but they still had fans coming out to the ballpark

Technically, yes. “Fans” as in, more than one, but they were the worst attended team in the country. The entire stadium was basically empty for games. You could get lower level seats for like $20.
>>
>>157857609
A's are more likely to fill a stadium in Vegas than in Sacramento. The stadium will likely be full of away fans, but the owner doesn't care as long as tickets are being sold.
>>
It really cannot be overstated how much of a decrepit shithole Oakland is. There are parts of Fallujah that are exponentially nicer and safer than East Oakland. It was getting nicer pre-pandemic but they went right out the window.
>>
>>157844163
Because the juiced balls aren't enough for Manfred and they want to inflate homer stats by having them play at high school parks. The Rockies have their stadium at a million foot elevation and were actually really good with a bunch of roiders in the 2000s, and yet their current roster of single A players set the team's single game HR record playing an away game against the As

My football team left, my basketball team left and now my baseball team leaves. Oakland fags? How do we respond? How do we cope?
>>
>>157858078
no one goes to Vegas anymore. Vegas people don't even go to the Aviators. The only thing they are looking to cash in on is the promise of casino money. Going to turn this into a souless plastic club like the Raiders.
>>
>>157858078
Sacramento gets very solid attendance from Kings games in down years. The A's could have very well become a fixture in Sactown, not to mention Sacramento is a significantly larger TV market than Las Vegas but John Fisher is a Jew who chose Vegas because it was easier to manipulate them after Oakland correctly told him to fuck off. Bottom line, he should have sold to Joe Lacob and we would have been done, Oakland would have a new ballpark, and the A's would be flourishing. None of that happened, I switched to the Padres anyways. John Fisher ruined my childhood, forever.

the Sactown jerseys have seriously triggered me. It is fun how people there seem to just go out to see the games for something to do and cheer along, but imagine how much better it would be if they were not just being used as placeholders?

start by getting the fuck out of Oakland

Owners saw the success of the Golden Knights and didn't understand it was fool's gold.
The NHL changed how the expansion draft worked which ended up getting them a competitive team right out of the box then handed them a BIBLICAL amount of officiating help to force them into cup run in their first season. Everything about them was engineered to establish a fanbase right out of the gate, combining that with the NHL getting to the city first and you got a captive audience.

These owners are taking their mediocre-dogshit teams and plopping them down in the middle of the city and expecting them to print money like the Knights do. The Raiders will keep chugging along just down to the fact it's football but the A's are in for a rude, rude awakening.
In conclusion: get BETTMAN'd dipshit
>>
>>157861023
It's a generational fumble that the MLB didn't even do market research on Sacramento, because it's a perfectly viable market that could pass for upper middle given the TV area and hopefully new ownership if Fisher was forced to sell. The end result is being some dumping ground like the Marlins currently are for the NL. As much as Fisher was complicit in giving Oaklanders the middle finger, MLB played a huge role too. There never was going to be a future for them if Manfred kept selling Vegas as the future as >>157861170 puts it, if you're not an org with the relative prestige of the Raiders, you're fucked. With how the A's have been since the 90s, nothing suggests to being wanted in Vegas if your organization is filled with con-artists top to bottom.
