When there were 4 playoff teams it made perfect sense, to truly root out the best from the rest + 1 more to make the math work. Now half the league gets into the playoffs so they could drop if to 50 games if they wanted
Same goes for splitting up awards between NL/AL, it made sense before because the NL played actual baseball and the AL didn't. but now none of them do

Every league is increasing the number of games, in real (contact) sports. NHL just took 2 preseason games and added them to the regular season, NFL will be doing the same to go to 18 after the next CBA. Why would MLB create LESS opportunities for tv/streaming and for owners to put ass in seats?
"Yea we know we're going to give you 10% less product but also you're going to give MLB, third (and hockey closing fast) popular sport in the country, more money for tv/streaming".

You're right about post season expanding but I don't think they will shrink the regular season, if anything they might expand to 165 games when MLB expands to 32 teams. MLB seasons will regularly start early/mid March and end in mid November
