It was a good transfer at the time. Considering they weakened a rival and that he stood in Juve's way in 2017 and 2018. But 2018/19 was more or less the only opportunity to win the UCL with that same washed core of players. A few players of the 2015 and 2017 final squads remained in 2021 because they were washed and finished.

Ronaldo wasn't washed, he had a contract to 2021, just won another UCL, scored 40+ goals for the club.
