The fuck's the movie? It doesn't have an audio of the film but a podcast audio of the cast discussing the film with the movie playing soundless. 30GB wasted! Why don't you say it is not a film but a podcast/interview?

There are 2 audio tracks, one is the regular track the other is the commentary track. Perhaps you need to change the track in your player. It should be defaulting to the normal track. Or you are using a player that does not support DTS. I had this issue trying to play back MKV files on my TV from USB before.

I am in HDB/PTP where they are sourcing that stuff from and also have usenet access. I haven't needed to pay for real debrid in years but I used to use it for downloading PS3 games.

what wild animal demands x264 instead of x265/av1 for high quality shit

>>
>>1355124
This is a topic we have been over a lot in /ptg/ on /g/ lately. It's not that x265 is inherently shit, it's the futility of using it. In order to achieve the same quality as x264 with it in the majority of cases you need to give it the same amount of bitrate. The best private trackers for high quality encodes of movies, HDB and PTP, do not allow 1080p and below encodes of SDR sources for this reason. It's pointless unless it's a UHD source with HDR. Now as far as the marketing claims of HEVC, the claim that it can achieve "better" results at lower bitrates, well sure if you are willing to accept a total loss of things like film grain. Check out these comparisons an anon posted between a x264 encode and a lower bitrate x265 encode:
https://slow.pics/c/Z20v9g1h

That brings us to the final and most important reason why not to get x265 encodes. Even if it is technically possible for one to be as good as x264, at the expense of the person encoding wasting more time on that encode, the encoders who are currently making these damn things are definitely not producing encodes as good as their x264 counterparts. They usually encode everything with the same settings with little regard to the source material.

AV1 on the other hand isn't mature enough yet. We'll see.

>>1355176
There isn't a device in use in my household right now that can't hardware decode HEVC. My laptop is only a few months old and it can even hardware decode AV1.
>>
>>1355124
Why would you re-encode a h264/avc remux into anything, anon?
Plus, hevc looks like shit (with a comparable bitrate) and I can't believe people actually fell for the marketing.

>>1355176
>>1355200
+ Unironically this, av1 decoding support is extremely rare and hevc decoding support isn't universal either.

It's like retards who are pushing for webp/avif/heic(yikes) for images or opus for audio at the expense of common sense.
>>
>>1355232
The autists on private trackers are trying their best to get encodes that are transparent to the source. This means doing comparisons to the source to make sure things like grain and detail are not being lost. They also compare various sources to see which are the best. In addition to that if the source contains flaws like dirty lines or banding they fix them. I prefer a good encode to a remux in most cases but I try to read all the available information from encoders, remuxers, and anyone else commenting. If the remux isn't completely bloated and the encoder didn't mention any work done on the source I might grab that instead. If there's no encode of a superior source I'll grab it even if it's bloated.

Asking to educate myself – what's wrong with YTS?
>>
>>1355244
Very low bitrates/file sizes. Their encodes would look better if they used a lower resolution like 480p at the same bitrate. It's easy to tell just how bad their encodes look if you compare it with something better. I'd say even playing a DVD back on a big modern TV looks better than their crap.
>>
>>1355244
Their target file sizes (and therefore bitrate, and therefore quality / clarity of the picture) are extremely inadequate.

In the past (in the 00s and before), many people more or less "had to settle" for lower size / lower quality releases, because of low internet speeds and low space on hard drives etc, but they actually understoon that this is inferior quality and that no magic can make a ~1.5 GB rip of a movie look good.

In modern day, Silicon Valley tech giants managed to convince the new generation of normies that abysmally low quality of content (photos, videos, audio) is fine and is how things should be. An entire generation, more or less, has grown up with Instagram photo quality, with Youtube video quality/bitrate, with Soundcloud audio quality. They don't know any better.

Not only that, but also the same companies pushing for these changes also introduced some "amateur tech bro" attitudes into the general public, creating annoying people who know juuuuuust a little bit about things, but not enough to know what they don't know. These people will tell you "but muh codecs bruh! have you heard about these cool codecs they are the shit!" and they are very eager to accept actual very bad quality served to them, as long as it's coupled with buzz words like "1080p", "4K", "opus", "20 kHz cutoff" etc. In the past, only geeky autists cared about this stuff, and they were the kind of people who actually knew the topic in-depth. Now, more people care about this but a lot of their care (and their superficial knowledge) is misdirected.

Bottom line is, even with a modern codec, you can't squeeze a movie into ~1.5 GBs and make it look decent. At best, you can make it barely passable for small inferior screens (smartphones) but that's it.

Also, >>1355245 is right: at this small file size, a deliberate resize into 480p will genuinely look better. Spatially consistent loss of smallest details in the image is much better than visible major encoding artifacts.

What's the difference between 264 and 265?
>>
>>1358779
265 is the newer codec and generally superior in every way except for compatibility considerations with older devices or if your cpu is dogshit and can't decode x265 fast enough (maybe on an older raspberry pi for instance)
OP was smoking something because codec has no correlation with quality. Something encoded with 265 with the same settings as 264 will be the same quality except 15% smaller file size. AV1 is even more efficient but rarely seen because it takes a lot more resources to encode.

>generally superior in every way
Lmao no. The only reason to use HEVC instead of H264 is if you are dealing with content that is at a resolution higher than 1080p or if you are dealing with HDR content. If you actually care about quality in the vast majority of cases you will need to use the same bitrate when encoding with HEVC as you will with H264. Since HEVC encoding takes longer you're achieving nothing except wasting your CPU cycles using it to encode 1080p or below content. It's banned for SDR content at 1080p and below on the best private trackers, HDB, PTP, and BTN for this reason. Only shitters doing microencodes use it.

Big asterisk on everything I just said, it doesn't apply to anime. There are reputable anime encoders using x265 and it should be encouraged too because hi10p x264 has barely any hardware support and 10 bit HEVC completely eliminates the need for that hacky cancer. Good fucking riddance.
>>
>>1359421
>Since HEVC encoding takes longer you're achieving nothing except wasting your CPU cycles
Nothing I said was incorrect. HEVC at the same bitrate will produce a smaller file than h264 and it's more intensive on the CPU because the compression is more efficient at the cost of computational intensity. You are achieving something, a smaller file size.
Compatibility, hardware support, and how easy it is on your CPU are a separate consideration. If we were to take the CPU cycle argument, AV1 wouldn't be worth it because it's exponentially more expensive than h264 or h265. None of this has to do with the quality of the encode itself.
>>
>>1359425
>a smaller file size
Not without loss of quality. Maybe it's "better" than H264 at a lower bitrate but it's not magically capable of achieving the same results as the best quality H264 encodes at a lower bitrate. That's just marketing, like when they said 128k mp3s are "CD quality."
>>
>>1359437
What part of more efficient compression don't you understand?
>>
>>1359421
That's not how that works at all.

When encoding at equivalent CRF, HEVC will produce files 15-25% smaller and CRF is typically what you want to use when targeting a specific quality.
When encoding a target bitrate, that's for a target filesize and the encoder will constrain the average bitrate within a window. That's undesirable since some scenes will require much higher peak bitrates than others. If you use the same target bitrate, HEVC and h264 will produce the same size file, but since HEVC has a better encoding scheme, it's able to fit more information into the same amount of bits. That's why it takes longer, because it's doing more work.

>Only shitters doing microencodes use it
A microencode at an extremely low quality has nothing to do with the capability of the codec itself and you are just associating x265=bad.

As if the people doing high quality encodes are using this lmao. When the goal is to make an encode that is transparent to the source HEVC fails to achieve it unless the bitrate is basically identical to what it takes to achieve it with H264. There are other issues with HEVC too. If you were on the good private trackers you could read the forum posts where they explain why they never use it for 1080p and below SDR.

I'm not a part of the overall discussion here but HOLY SHIT MATE please re-read what you typed, several times if required until you see the issue.
>>
>>1359536
Lmao I somehow missed that when I read his reply. Total idiocy. All the other shit about hardware support etc that HEVCfags bring up every time, as if anyone cares in 2025 when any device bought within the last 5 years supports HEVC is totally irrelevant. Nobody is arguing against the use of HEVC because of a lack of hardware support anymore. It's not worth it for other reasons.
>>
>They don't know H.266 exists and accept old, inefficient encodings
>>
>>1359567
I don't care about efficiency I care about quality. I am not a streaming provider who pays a CDN per GB transferred and wants to shave money off my bandwidth costs. I am not a poorfag living in India who wants 1GB 1080p Bollywood movies. I will wait a few minutes longer and give many more GB to get something that isn't shit.
>>
>>1358779
also in addition to what others have said keep in mind that the vast majority of 265 stuff is just re-encodes of 264 stuff which means it losing quality
>>
Why are movies not encoded in vp9?
>>
>>1359777
Tho not the answer you're looking for technically speaking the movies you can rent on YouTube are probably in VP9, so there you go.

VP9 may as well be called YouTube Codec, because thats all it is since it was cheaper for google to "build" (read buy up a company) their own codec than license HEVC. Whens the last time you ran across a VP8? VP9 is gonna be extinct soon the same way due to AV1 because there was never any practical use for it outside of YT. Unless you have YT's hardware encoders theres absolutely no reason why you would ever encode it at home, even less so for piracy, just use HEVC if you have a shit PC, or AV1 now if you don't.
>>
>>1360298
HEVC is patented, as was h264 befote it ran out, dealing with patented codecs can be real annoying, many OSes don't come with them, usually you have to buy them if you want them legally. vp9 is between h264 and HEVC, unlss there is some technical reason I think it would have been a good fit before AV1 drops.

>Whens the last time you ran across a VP8?
Quite recently actually, entirely because of webm.
Thankfully AV1+opus is webm-supported (if unofficially) so we'll hopefully see VPx die soon for those usecases.
In unrelated news I absolutely hate those shitty webm transcodes that the various 'compress to discord' sites and such do. Even with the extreme bitrate constraint it could be so much better by lowering resolution, choosing appropriate frame rate, choosing the correct codec, appropriately compressing audio, and putting some actual encoding effort. Whenever a poorly encoded video starts floating around on discord and such "Oh look it's the I'm not a moron clip into two hours of portal gameplay again, wow it all fits in a discord upload so impressive. Oh, it's the entire deadpool/morbius/hitchhiker's guide movie. Oh, it's that 100 cheeses video, can you believe that fits in an 8MB upload? Just ignore the shitty audio and massive artifacts like it's JPEG quality 5"... Every time, I get such an urge to fix this garbage. I've already done that a couple times for some animations I could find good youtube sources for, but sometimes it feels like I'm the only person this anal about encoding, it's infuriating

H265 doesn't blur out the grain any more than H264 does, unless you're doing a shit job. If you do a good job, H265 will perform better.
There's literally no reason to be against H265 other than having a potato device from decades ago.
Of course this depends on what the source is like. There's no reason to encode a source from H264 to H265 just for the sake of it being H265 if the source was already small enough.
>slowpics
This comparison holds 0 weight when there is no filesize information or information on the source material and what parameters were used to encode them.
>>1355124
AV1 blurs details no matter how you tune it, there is no reason to use it for actual high fidelity. Only use it if you're willing to compromise.
>>1360298
>Whens the last time you ran across a VP8?
Up until what, 2 years ago now? 4chan used VP8 only for videos, which makes up for a lot of VP8 encoded videos. Hell, people STILL use it.
>>1377119
Why the downscale?
>>1376038
I find it fun to occasionally recreate memes people send, end up with much smaller filesize, but higher resolution and high quality, because retards don't understand still image videos and slideshows don't need to be 60 fps

>av1 decoding support is extremely rare and hevc decoding support isn't universal either
Just don't be a retard and have 20 year old CPU.
You don't need hardware decode, software decode on the CPU has been possible for ages and is very easy to do.
My old i7 6700k could in theory decode 8k 120fps av1, and that was years ago, maybe decoders are better now.
