TQ: I've played D-Day (and other naval landing) games with rules for offshore bombardments, counter-fire from coastal batteries etc... and frankly it just all got a bit too much. The kinds of timescales and responsiveness of fire (except from maybe smaller DDs) just didn't align with on-the-ground tactical decision making. Much better represented as a pre-game preliminary bombardment.
>>96277192It's honestly quite a challenge. I feel like combining land and sea might need a really specific conflict or battle, ideally with ships providing fire, but also landing crafts and maybe multiple small islands or suchlike?I seem to recall situations where there was a ship supporting landing craft, and the marines that landed need to get up a hill and take out a shore battery, so that more ships and troops can be brought up. It was some age of sail battle, might have been northern wars or something.
SUMMER BOYS SHOW YOUR SUMERIANS!
for 28mm mass battles would you recommend Impetus/Midgard style single basing, or multiple smaller bases making up a unit?
>>96277663For mass battles, I wouldn't recommend 28mm at all.
What's the consensus on Nevermind the Billhooks?
>>96277663single basing on a movement tray.
>>96278555The Osprey Graham Turner book on the wars of the roses is excellent btw. In 2025 the fact its like 30 quid for a nice big hardback is remarkable.
Which base size and figure per base should I pick for Austrians and the French for 1809?
What is the most basic bitch pair of historical opponents I should collect as my first ever historicals project (not counting ww2)? A period that's real straightforward to research, got good information on what the armies should look like, easily available minis, easy to paint, etc.
>>96280634American Civil War.It's recent enough, many companies make models in lots of different scales. There's plenty of rules to choose from. Most importantly you don't have to paint hundreds of white cross-straps and/or trousers like you would for Napoleonics.
>>96277663I don't like singe bases and movement tray, so I go for multi-basing but reduced frontage since you can use them for many rules. So two bases on a 50mm or 60mm frontage, etc. or three Hail Caesar 40mm bases for a unit, etc. will equal 120mm.
I'm making laminated "platoon cards" to track markers/casualties/shock for Charlie Don't Surf and will be using color photographs from the Vietnam war as a background. Which image should I choose to represent US forces?this one, or ...
>>96281875this one
>>96281875I like the first option better.
>>96281875Instead, use an AI-generated image to get what you really want
>>96283111Kill yourself
>>96283111I'm actually using AI to colorize black and white photos because finding good color photos that suit my purposes has been a challenge
My progress so far on my 2022 Russia-Ukraine War project
This is what a valid charge in tactica 2 looks like. A little games of footsies
>>96286183Needs more drones.
Another valid tactica 2 charge where standing next to the enemy counts. And the slingers can't fire into melee so my almost dead chariots won't be killed before they can attack the camel riders
>>96286268
I wish there were decent WW2 STLsI can't draw and I've never tried sculpting before so I wouldn't be able to do it
>>96286264No it doesn't, this is a 2022 project, before the war got really gay
>One of the biggest wargaming companies in the world>they thought this paint job was appropriate enough to be used for a close up advertisement
>>96286561They need to stop trying to do eyes.
I don't understand why people bother painting eyes, it just looks terrible most of the time
>>96287333These eyes will look okay at tabletop height >>96287388These eyes look good. Blacked out eyes are perfect for miniatures >>96286561These look awful
>>96286345Wargame3d's vehicles are decent.
>>96286183Looking pretty cool anon.Don't see many Mi-2's on the table, especially not at 28mm scale!>>96286228>>96286272making charging, melee and missile attacks work is always a challenge in these kinds of games.imo units should be able to shoot into melee provided their line of sight isn't blocked by friendly units, and units charging should end up in base contact, rather than in contact by a single point. Just my opinion, nothing related to Tactica 2 rules.>>96280634Maybe Normandy in WW2? Allies have Sherman tanks and Infantry, Axis have Panzer IV tanks and Infantry. Easy to find the uniform and tank colors, many miniatures available in 28mm, 15mm, and 6mm.Then you can add more units as you get more comfortable with your rules: Mortars, Light vehicles, Tigers, Churchills, Panthers, Nebelwerfers, Artillery, Aircraft etc.
I've started reading this in preparation for getting my 3D printer up and runningSeems like a pretty solid book and goes into depth about the battles although likely not as much as Thunder on the Danube>>96288162Yeah these look good but what about infantry?
>>96289680WW2 infantry seems surprisingly unpopular as STLs. My guess is it's a mix of it being boring, there being a great many plastic kits to compete with, and WW2 enjoyers being unpleasably detail-oriented.
3dbreed.com makes stl flies ww2 infantry
>>96289451Thanks! Yeah I wanted a helicopter for some scenarios with air assaults and "get to tha Choppa!!" style extractions, and I was looking for a Mi-8 or Mi-17, but they are very expensive and would frankly be too large for the tabletop. I went with the Mi-2 because it was only $9 (I ordered it from Poland) and it's small enough to be used as a prop in game, even if it's a little less accurate
>>96286345The only miniatures I've been able to find that actually have realistic proportions instead of ridiculous heroic scale and have good detail are from RKX miniatures and Studio Historia, both in 28mm.RKX has a very limited catalogue, so the chances of them having what you're looking for are slim (Berlin soviets, winter US, fallschirmjager, winter Ger and Canadians). Also, the variety of poses is not that great.Studio Historia does kickstarters and from the reviews that I've read the're not great. They seem to be behind in schedule releasing their kcickstarter minis when they are already launching the next one, and their minis look good on render, but are hard to print due to thin parts. Keep in mind that I don't have a printer so I don't have actual experience with miniatures of any of those creators, I just try to collect files in hopes of using them in the future.
Does anyone have achtung panzer and iron coffins supplement please?
For 28mm Samurai, would you recommand Warlord plastics, Fireforge plastics, or Perry metals
>>96293228>Fireforge plasticsYes, best bang for your buck: Perry are nice but more expensive, and their casting quality...well, sometime it's incredible how such nicely sculpted figures are cast so poorly. It seems to vary by batch somehow.Warlord are IIRC old Wargames Factory figures...and terrible.
>>96293228What this anon >>96293319 said. Warlord's ashigaru have a ton of online reviews because that's the sprues that came in the Test of Honour starter box. Everybody agrees it's a pain in the ass to assemble. Do yourself a favor and go with Fireforge if you need a decent sonae. If you want a skirmish force there's nothing wrong with Grey for Now and Zenith Miniatures metal minis except their prices. I found Footsore to be more carved than rounded and Perry Bros/North Star to be a bit old school proportionned but you do you.
>>96286561That's a proper russian rose blyat
Do you guys 3d print your stuff? Where do you get your models from? Or do you make them yourselves? I am looking for 15mm stuff, mainly ACW, but I can only find set dressing, no dudes or even cannons.
I have one of the Bolt Action blind boxes (went for the Brit + Commonwealth one seeing as Brits just got their new army book) waiting for me at home and was wondering if anyone's opened theirs yet, what's the general consensus on the contents? I've only seen people open their German ones and they seemed fairly decent overall.
>>96293228Buy 8 metal Samurai in 15mm from Essex for 3.95 GBP...their sample packs are so cheap
>>96287314Really this. Eyes in 28mm look like shit in 95% of the cases. It's simply not worth the effort, because chances are that the given painter is not among the 5% that can pull off great looking eyes on a regular basis. Those soviets would not look worse with just a dark wash as their eyes
>>96296417Myminifactory if you don't want to get into piracy.
>>96296417https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-acw-full-figurines-pack-15mm-for-wargame-195416
>>96286183How did you make or get these anon?
>>96298452The Ukrainians are from Empress and Spectre Miniatures, the Russians are from Spectre Miniatures and a Russian company called Ares28. The armored car and Mi-2 helicopter are both toys I painted, and the BMP-2 is from Empress Miniatures as well
>>96296417I bought a 3D printer to print piano wargames figures but I haven't started yet, just waiting for extra shit to arriveI haven't found anything else exciting yet but I'm sure it existsI'm hoping to learn to sculpt
>>96293228Steelfist Miniatures make the coolest samurai, but fireforge are very good for basic infantry and filling out large armies. Perry are very good as well, you simply can't go wrong with Perry. Warlord Games ones are so dogshite it's not even funny. Avoid Warlord like the plaque. It's funny, they are simultaneously the worst samurai on the market but also the most expensive.
I know one of you Toms played few games with him. I should have too.F.
>>96302359Literally who? I thought I probably know the guy from his works, but there's surprisingly little about it despite various moanings about the unmitigated loss his death means to the world without any specifics.
Hey, /hwg/. I'm working on a river for my 28mm european village table. It's a small creek, about twice as wide as a man is tall, and I'm considering colors for the water. I think green and brown would be the most realistic for a river that small, bur blue would have the advantage of contrasting with a grassy table and immediately scanning as "river" to the audience.Any thoughts?
>>96302735Dark browns, greys, greens. You're able to see the bottom of a small creek.
>>96302359Heh I bought mdf airships from him back in the day and boy did I do a clumsy job with them lol. Rip, that is a shame for him and his family. He definitely was artistic with MDF.
>>96302780If you're concerned about clearly identifying it as a river, what about emphasising the river banks? Either stony, or possibly lined with rushes, or deliberately quite steeply cut vertical to show a 'maintained' river if it's flowing through/near a village.
Is it possible to make Late Republican Romans out of Victrix's Mid-Republican Roman kit with a bit of kitbashing? I know the helmets are wrong, but I'm assuming that the chainmail and other equipment on the bodies are otherwise indistinguishable?
>>96302359Big F from us at Ostfront Publishing. Was awesome to get to know Ali when we stayed in Çanakkale. He gave us a tour around the Gallipoli peninsula and was just a really kind, motivated guy. A wizard on the lasercut MDF and 3d Printing. He first reached out to me many years ago, looking at doing a boxed set for Lacquered Coffins, with mdf aircraft and everything needed to play. When I stayed in Çanakkale we ended up writing an alt-ancients game based on ancient Anatolian civilizations, but taking their beliefs literally (so illuyanka and snake-people and crazy Hittite rituals that turn the enemies into women...)
>>96302359F.
Bunch of scattered terrain for Bolt Action and its ilk. This'll go in my army's carry case. I've found it really helps the world war 2 vibe to have tank traps and such all over.
>>96302514On the surface, cheap supplier for 6mm buildings due to him being a one man operation based in Turkey and using mdf. But he was really creative and always trying something new, like lasercut Historical or Weird Wild West miniatures.>>96303060Do you know what disease got him? I just hope he had time and energy to prepare for this with his family.
I've acquired a box of small planes.
>>96298532Thank you
Been looking at getting started with the ACW, but some manufacturers split starter packs for the Union into Eastern and Western armies, whereas the Confederacy is only ever a monolith. Was there really a different organisation or appearance for the Union or is it just an old wargamerism that some companies can't drop?
>>96305571The confederacy was much more ragtag in their uniforms so trying to represent regional variation would be far harder and far less well documented than the Union's
>>96303486>Do you know what disease got him?Quite a long battle with cancer. He had already had a few surgeries and chemo and recovered by the time I met him in 2023, then went down hill again after that. Glad I got to see him in relatively good health. Went to see the ancient city of Troy with him and his son as well, good museum at the site with some pretty epic artifacts and a particularly striking stone sarcophagus
As someone just about to get into Bolt Action, are you guys playing 2nd edition still or have you moved onto 3rd. Would be interested in your perspective. I found the second edition materials at the top of the thread and rules seems fun. 3rd worth getting into?
>>96308515My group fully moved to third. It's broadly the same rules, but 3rd removed a lot of to-hit modifiers like the penalty for long range shots and the like. The big difference is army building. In 1st and 2nd you had a Reinforced Platoon, which was basically a rifle platoon plus one each of a bunch of options like machine guns, tanks, artillery, etc. 3rd switches it so that you have a Rifle Platoon plus various other platoons, like a Support Platoon of MGs and mortars, an armored platoon of tanks or armored cars, an engineer platoon, etc.It makes the game bigger and requires more models, but it also means you get to field more than one tank at a time. I prefer it.
>>96305571Eh, lost boomers making the minis rely on outdated research and tropes. After the first year of the war the Confederacy was able to supply a steady stream of good uniforms, relying on several large depots to distribute. Each deport relied on production from nearby states and each state made uniforms different from each other so technically you can make region specific Confederate minis. Most also wore kepis unlike the trope that they all ran around with hats but it's easier to differentiate Union and Confederate if the grey are all wearing hats. The eastern Union armies tried to enforce uniform standards, specifically hats since many soldiers wore hats instead of the kepis. In the west hats were more tolerated but essentially there shouldn't be a difference.
What do you guys think about BlackKnightMiniatures?
>>96286561I cannot fathom why people who aren't really, really good painters try to do eyes apart from practice. It literally looks like a perfectly good stylistic choice to just let a wash shade in the eye sockets. You can literally kinda lose sight of peoples eyes at a distance in real life. It just makes it look like theit face is kinda in shadow.
Are there any companies that produce wargaming-oriented reference books? Sort of like Osprey, but actually up to date in research and giving information as to unit organisation, uniform guides, heraldry, things like that. Basically, a single one book guide to building and painting an historical army.
>>96309752Osprey.
>>96309048What are your source for ACW uniforms?
>>96309752Osprey, Helion, Partizan Press... and others but you should be more specific
>>96309872Mostly this, good introduction.
>>96300462What is that standard thing on the left called? Never seen that before.
>>96309752>Sort of like Osprey, but actually up to date in researchB8
>>96310142Are the Osprey accurate?
>>96310304Osprey's don't actually give you any good information. Don Troiani, the artist, had the largest collection of actual civil war period uniforms in existence until he sold most of it to focus on earlier periods. Osprey Publishing are just some Bongs using outdated sources.

>>96306460>>96309048Thanks guys, much appreciated.
anyone got any tips or tricks to create the illusion of mass for 28mm armies (ancient/medieval) while still providing a good number of units on the table?
>>96313731Get a bigger table.
>>96313731Use flat figures
>>96308551You can put way more unfunny shit on the board now though. Four Flakvierling plus an officer to activate them will ruin the game. Tanks die rather quick now, too, thanks to the hit bonus for AT guns.Really, not a fan of the 3rd edition at all.
>>96310735>can never explain how or why
>>96313980to be fair AT guns did knock out something like 70-80% of tanks in WW2 and once a shot penetrates theres a high chance the tanks disabled for the rest of the fight at the very least
Somewhere in Burma, 1943, at the end of the dry season...
>>96314884A British force consisting of a rifle platoon and some lend-lease tanks faces off...
>>96314894Against an oddly well-armored Japanese force, a rifle platoon with a really bizarre amount of mortars. I think they had six, counting the knee mortars.
>>96314905The battle took a hard turn in Britain's favor early. The British forward artillery observer, accompanied by 7 commandos, infiltrated into the command bunker at the center of the map and called in an artillery strike that destroyed one of the Japanese tanks and killed half a squad of infantry. Meanwhile, the Grant destroyed the other tank, pinning the IJA's self propelled howitzer in place with the wreckage. The Japanese never really recovered from that.
>>96314912While they killed a universal carrier and the PIAT team aboard it, that was the only hard kill the Japanese really scored. Their banzai chargers charged a Stuart tank and failed to achieve anything, at which point they were gunned down by a mix of the Stuart and rifle fire before the commando squad charged them in turn and wiped them out at bayonet point. We called it there.Mini batrep over.
>>96313731Smaller terrain and bases compared to figure size.
>>96314894>Greetings, my fellow Brits
>>96315002It would've been more historically accurate for me to field two squads from an Indian division backing up the commandos and tanks, I'll do that once I've got the models for it.
>>96314928Pretty based anon, although system doesn't seem very balanced...Actually it's the Allies who seem to be pretty pretty well-armored in this situation from what I've read. Japanese tanks were not uncommon, and Allied tanks pretty thin on the ground.Japanese use of Mortars is pretty common, especially the 50mm Grenade Dischargers (not actually Knee Mortars, but that seems to be the common name in the west). In 1943 the Allies were mostly on a massive retreat: fighting withdrawing actions, and attempting to marshal the tens of thousands of refugees and somehow make it over crazy mountain / jungle tracks into India... it wasn't pretty! I think a large part of the issue was the British didn't really think Burma was that important and didn't bother to station much in the way of forces. Then once the attacks came, things just broke down and no one could really communicate or coordinate properly except the Japanese.Armies look great though, and cool to see people gaming Burma.
>>96316342Bolt Action's not particularly balanced, no. I got lucky in the forward artillery observer's strike scoring two direct hits at the start of turn 2. Each one's a 1/6 chance. From my perspective, Burma is handy because it means my Brits can realistically fight almost every axis power, including the Japanese, without me constructing elaborate alternate histories like my US vs British one.
How do you guys like to base medieval mixed infantry units like bill and bow? Archers either side of melee infantry like proto-pike and shot, or one lot behind the other depending on if they're in or out of combat
>>96316673Yea just like that, I thought of basing with the bills and bows actually mixed on the same base but It looks a bit silly when the unit behind them looks like theyre about to shoot them in the back
>>96286561the eyes really do the model a disservice honestly. I like that it’s genuine amateur painting, but the models are very good compared to a lot of other miniature games and that should really be the selling point of bolt action
Please guys, stop painting eyes unless you're really good at it.
Would using the flat-topped kite shields found in the (mid-) medieval victrix kit on the Norman infantry kit be enough to turn them into 12th century infantry?
>>96321604I wouldn't complain. It looks like they still used round and teardrop shields as well.
It's crazy how much dumb shit is posted on the internet as of it's fact. Who actually believes this?
>>96322822there is some truth to it as a Targe is made particularly thick. making it heavy for its size. It wasn't necessarily guaranteeing you protection, but it could if you're lucky stop the odd bullet from a long distance. >>96322013>>96321604Baron's War 1.0 (Cadfael era, Stephen vs whassername) and First Crsuade really are the transitional periods between that Norman hauberk and helmet style and the full knightly kit of the high middle ages. Normans spot on for the first Crusade, maybe by the end of the first Baron's War it's a mixture between those and the kind of knights Fireforge and WGA currently make. >>96322822Perhaps overstated but there are accounts of those Turkic/Mughal style bucklers holding up against firearms in the 19th csntury. Note thatwhen the British government troops reversed their bayonet drill to resemble a phalanx striking at the unshielded side (Brits love larping as Greeks, look at all their ship names), the Targe weren't 'avin it large...

so, seeing as WGA prices are going up, are any of their historical sets worth picking up before the price rise? I've always thought they were stronger at making sci-fi/fantasy.
>>96326399WGA has always been higher priced than competitors like Perry, Victrix, Northstar, etc. so I'm not sure why they are raising prices, this is the first I'm hearing of it. After 600 even the Franks and Cymry were mass adopting the shield wall. Before it was a rare tactic and after almost everyone was doing it.It's sad that none of the wargames stat Saxons differently during this important 150 year period were other people get special lists and special troops.
>>96331870Unsure what expectation isn't being met here given 1. Dba does have its own restrictions 2. Sources from before thSaxon kingdoms came together are limited and 3. W European warfare is pretty similar amongst nations age to age. Maybe try Dux Britanniarum or A Song of Arthur and Merlin, both have historical lists but maybe more flexibility out the gate. Also this is just one view which is whg reading for its own sake is neevr a waste of time. From my understanding even up to Godwinsons era the Welsh liked mountain pass ambushes, light cavalry, javelins and bows as well as the shield wall to the extent that the heavier Saxons /Anglo Danes went lighter when fighting them and emulated their tactics.
>>96331919I know the systems and Im referring to how dozens of graves kept having Shields that were 2/3rds the size of the later shield wall shields. They are common in the graves of Angles, Saxons, and maybe Jutes in Briton for 150 years leading up to 600 AD.In many wargames, based on graves and documents, many warband peoples turn to the shield wall, and adopt larger spears as well... Between 550 and 600.Saga didn't have the specifics to include stuff like this. They gave the Picts the hunting proto crossbow, and they gave the Irish their chariots and hunting dogs.I suppose if Saxons were made fast warbands they would be repelled by British auxilla.Slingshot never covered this as far as I know. They did argue quite well that Gauls often were more like fast blades. Lots of good patches and fixes out of them.
>>96331975Aux seem to upset people. Idk why. Your primary evidence points to a lot more light troops being used for sure.

okay lads, I'm on the quest for my ideal mass battle ancients rules.so far I have only tried Hail Caesar, and these are my thoughts from a couple games.I like the flexibility of the rules - having total freedom for unit sizes, the toolbox approach for unit creation. As someone who only ever plays with a very small number of friends, I like being able to be the one to set up the scale of the game and create unit profiles etc. in a way that seems right to me. The lack of period flavour doesn't bother me, because I like to create my own.Another big plus related to the freedom of basing, is that I love the spectacle of the game. Coming from non-historical gaming, one of the things that drew me in was seeing big historical armies with really cool command bases leading the figures. So, big, impressive individual units, and the ability to field commanders on big diorama bases is a must for me.The big negative for me though is the scale of the game, number of units you're expected to field on a very large table, and consequently the simplicity of the rules. I can only game on a 6x4 table, so while I like the big units you can field, the expectation that you will field 3 divisions (so, >12 units per side) on a 12 foot table is too big. Consequently, the really simplified mechanics, huge movement ranges etc. are too fast and loose for a smaller army (equivalent to about 1 division in HC), aren't that satisfying, and lead to weird things happening. So, in summary, the biggest thing I like about Hail Caesar, the big units and spectacle of battle, is itself undermined for me by my limited playing area. The way I see it, while I could just reduce unit sizes down significantly and cram 3 divisions on my table, that would destroy what I liked most about it. What I'd prefer instead is to find some rules to try out that have similarly flexible/large units and command bases for the spectacle of a battle, but are a bit more crunchy for better play with fewer units.
>>96332425A couple more things I will say I liked though, and this is coming from someone who most recently was playing Warhammer The Old World, is that I liked the command roll system and the lack of rules lawyering for movement. I liked the unpredictability of giving an 'ideal' order and seeing to what extent it gets carried out, if at all. With movement, I absolutely hate games that want you to measure wheeling and shit like that. Games like Warhammer fantasy for me are just exercises in knowing movement rules/ranges, where winning or losing comes down to how expertly you can manoevre your cumbersome units to set up charges, as opposed to actually trying to fight something resembling a battle. The command roll system helps with that as well, by make it necessarily more chaotic rather than a finely controlled 'competitive' style game.

Medieval armour almost always seems to be represented as near black in art. Are wargamers wrong when they paint full plate men-at-arms in gleaming steel?
>>96338232>Medieval armour almost always seems to be represented as near black in art.Black is the most common finish on steel because that's the one it comes out of the forge with.>Are wargamers wrong when they paint full plate men-at-arms in gleaming steel? No. Polishing, heat treating, and painting were also done.
>>96338244But it wouldn't look out of place to paint many dudes in a medieval army with very dark armour?
>>96338285People were interested in showing off their wealth, not fitting in. Also, steel body armour was not the only source of colour on the battlefield.
>>96338232A lot of older paintings were actually brighter than what they are today, since they use carbon based pigment for the paint they tend to fade and get quite dull, some colors more than others. I dont think its meant to be black but rather just an attempt to painting something shiny and its faded. Notice how all the lances and bows are pitch black, I think they were some other color that has since faded, so I would only assume that the armours was meant to be something brighter that has also faded. The fact that some of the armours still exist and are shiny is proof they were shiny. Theres also examples of noting when armour is black in history, heres the "black army" of hungary, who were noted for having distinctly black armour.Noone would bat an eye if you painted your metals black though, I think that would look cool.
Steam 4X sale on at the moment, Rise of the White Sun, autistic warlord era game, might be of interest to some of you
>>96338232>>96338285I've gone down this rabbit hole before. The majority of armor for footmen would have been raw steel colored, some would be lightly polished. For men at arms having blackened armor was common, but highly polished armor was even more common. Having mirror shiny polished armor wasn't really a thing, that came from the Victorian era where they polished and "restored" armor for museum and private display, but most museum sets are still in original color, mostly the perception of mirror shine armor came from Victorian era art and painting. Some wealthy individuals had trim on their armor treated to appear golden in color, such as their visor or elbow trim, etc. Notably Edward IV had his entire suit of armor treated in a golden gleam. Most European or UK museums have armor collections where you can study the colors of the armor yourself and see what they would have looked like. >>96338316This is also correct. The artists of the time were limited by the available medium for painting, and painting silver armor would have been a lot more difficult than painting black armor.

I picked up a pack of Victrix's 12mm WW2 stuff ages ago when they first started, and they've mostly sat on my shelf since then after an initial attempt to base them individually/in twos and threes to play 1:1 platoon/company scale games, since the pack comes with a full company. However, I found that they're just too damn small for that. It was really fiddly to move all these tiny bases around the table, and since the terrain is so small you can't really do things like garrison buildings anyway, which is the attraction of that scale of gameplay. Equally, I didn't come across at the time a good set of rules to try a more abstracted, larger scale game. I discounted FOW cause all I ever hear is that it's very gamey and doesn't capture WW2 at all.So, I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions for a good set of rules for these guys

>>96339518>Vietnam just isn't a very fun warYou're probably just playing the wrong rulesets. Asymmetrical games are hard to design and take a ton of testing, which is why most companies don't seem to bother making it work. A good Vietnam game will make both sides fun, each for different reasons. Playing the VC / NVA should allow a player a lot of hidden movement, a lot of intel on where the US are, the ability to melt away when needed, booby traps, lots of fun stuff.

Turns out they had something on their side that wasn't just guys, AKs and RPGs. In order for a game to be even loosely based in reality, it should reflect those aspects of war that aren't directly sculpted on the miniatures. If you're running VC hordes of infantry over open ground against US forces with helicopters and tanks, with no hidden movement, you're pretty much in /awg/ territory as that didn't really happen. If your US squad is sweating bullets, stuck between a booby trapped path and a VC squad that just vanished, while lost in the jungle and outside of artillery support, with choppers still 30 min away, then you're really podracing. The more you look at war in general, the more you realize just how asymmetric most conflicts are anyway, so it's pretty much a prerequisite of designing an accurate game to be able to handle at the very least different soldier quality and armaments.
>>96358662>There's a reason the Vietnamese won the Vietnam War, and the Mujahideen won the Soviet-Afghan war, and the Taliban won in Afghanistan. Turns out they had something on their side that wasn't just guys, AKs and RPGs.Aren't these wars lost not on tactical side but mainly on political side?

>>96360755Fucking disgusting. Tiny hands and the helmet on the knight is actually smaller than the peasant's head.
>>96360507They arent the best, but they're not that bad either. They have some decent detailing, but the proportions are generally lacking, and they suffer from the lack of sharpness that many plastic miniatures do. Some of the individual sculpts are also much better than others. Victrix is much superior in terms of a plastic kit and the range of options in the kit, but WGA would suffice on the tabletop with a decent paintjob. I would add that the footsore minis, while decent, do have many casting flaws and (to a lesser extent) share some of the odd proportions with the WGA ones.
>>96361075I agree with your assessment. But I personally only ever find them to be okay when painted by the best painters. Image as an example. And it's true that Footsore has really bad casting for the Barons war range, I suspect that's due to how popular their kickstarters are. Still sloppy. So many big holes or just parts of the miniature missing that I've needed to fill and fix.
>>96361110I had a lot of deep gouges in helmets or misaligned features, fully half of the horses were missing entire rear legs (which i still havent fixed), the infantry had some overly wiry legs and arms, one was missing much of his face, others had weapons entirely encased in pewter chunks, casting quality generally very poor for the original baron's war range, and requiring a massive amount of work. I found the outremer casts to be much improved however, and I was generally very pleased with the hospitallers and the arabs, although the turks/turcopoles look no better than the old perry sculpts, which werent exactly their best ones.
>>96361075>They arent the best, but they're not that bad either.Agreed. Perfectly fine gaming miniatures.
>>96361201Ye, I hate the metal horses. Shame the WGA plastic horses look so bad. You know the Stephen Langton mini in horse? My KS one arrived with the cross snapped off and none of the four replacements arrived in one piece either.
>>96361207Yes exactly, although if you want late 12th-13th.c medieval plastic sculpts I do think you should buy the Victrix kit over the WGA one, if you have the option to do so. I bought the medieval Knights and was very impressed with it in terms of details, proportions, size of the kit/customisation options, plastic quality, casting quality, and value for money. I've not acquired the foot knight kit yet, but it also looks great. >>96361246lmao, sounds similar to my experience with them. Did you sculpt a replacement from greenstuff? I dont even know how to approach the missing legs, I think i've got to learn to cast or try and use very long grass/shrubs on the bases.
fuck why are Victrix Late Saxons sold out everywhere including their own website
>>96361304Did you contact them for a replacement? Bit late for me to ask for replacements all these years after the kickstarter but that's my fault for not looking too closely after receiving them.
Does anyone know how to extract encrypted images from ZunTsu game boxes?
>>96361407No, I thought it was one thing to ask for one replacement horse, but another to ask for eleven replacement horses.
>>96361311Looks like you're Late yourself.
I'm looking for a rules covering or being able to cover Imjin War in 10/15mm scaleI would be grateful for any help
>>96358751That's American cope
>>96360604WGA models are the definition of mid.
>>96360755What is that AWFUL dogSHIT model on the far right? LMAO
Recently been reading the Midgard rules, and like them a lot. Got them a few months back and wasn't immediately keen, but they've grown on me a lot, and I'm really itching to build up a couple of opposing armies. Just not sure which ones I want to go for.
>>96363162>Midgard
>>96363204Right on cue
The boomers on Facebook are VERY angry with Blumpf right now. They want their toys NOW
>>96363739I don't understand the position of wargamers who think>everything becoming more expensive is good for the hobby>it's not happening but you deserve it >>96361207I just ordered the Dark Age Irish, which if you are to take this board seriously are a detail-less crime against the hobby and incompatible with my Victrix Late Romans in gaming terms because the Victrix ones are three times their size. >>96360742These are fine. >ignore basing autism, just do what works for your units and table...frontage is what matters>use a variety of sources, pop history, documentaries, dramas and yes Osprey books are all fine because a broad range of sources will help you develop a feel for a period or setting and you're not relying on one perspective>set realistic goals... large skirmishes of 40-60 models a side can be a quite satisfying, but you might just want to do 15 to get started...and paint 5 at a time... the main thing is getting started and building confidence>breaks are fine, even if you paint 10 models every 2 months, in 3 years that's nearly 200 models>with posable minis it isn't really necessary to mix 4 manufacturers, and you can have different manufacturers provide units for your army, the differences are minute >try to keep every project between 4 and 6 boxes of minis>felt and aquarium terrain is fine>colour priming and washing your minis just to play a game is fine The hobby is in a really good place, the options are all awesome, you wouldn't think so to listen here
>>96364232>I don't understand the position of wargamers who think>everything becoming more expensive is good for the hobbyI think some people just realize that there are more important issues than our hobbies and if our hobbies have to take a small hit as a consequence of solving greater issues, then so be it
>>96364493As a non Yank I don't think it's unreasonable that 1. Each country contribute more to its own security 2. America regains some manufacturing capacity for strategic and economic reasons but I think the route is too choppy, and there is a latent "well this will hurt the people who put elves and orcs together in a coffee house, so it s good" sentiment that misses the point. Take a huge company like GW, whose model is you buy a starter set as a new player and you ride the bronco of constant changes until you fall off (incidentally every one of their games is great if you just buy two starter sets snd play rules as written). There is a negative contribution in their astronomical price setting affecting other products and the way they create the impression of a walled garden, but they are so fucking huge that they support whole other companies indirectly and create so many new historical and alternative interested wargamers every few years... they end up being a positive
>>96364610>when WE shrink the economy, have senile leadership and protect abusers and genocidal regimes it's good>I can't understand scale or that everybody is interrelated socially and economically, and so I see things thst are not to my taste as "bloat" in need of an economic soft purgeIt's not good for the hobby. Most sensible people have slowed down purchases anyway, post COVID. I usually buy a few boxes of minis, some paint and terrain and modelling bits twice a year, one or two board games a year, probably 6-12 books a year relating to the hobby, and then maybe just the odd mini or errant box a couple of times a year.
>>96314928Thanks for posting these, always enjoy seeing your stuff
>>96348494That looks superb, great job
>>96364647I don't understand why Brits like (You) have such bad TDS. I experience it very heavily online everywhere I look from old british men, especially in the Historical Wargaming scene. It's not like the UK was the only country hit with tariffs, and the UK tariffs are incredibly minor compared to pretty much everyone else, yet the British seem to be especially frazzled over. I should be the angry one, I was just about to do another big miniature project and this shit affects me personally since literally no British company is selling to the US. The worst part about all this is that it's the Royal Mails fault, because they don't have a "system" in place to deal with the tariffs
>>96364936Not BritishDon't have tds, You have no theory of mind
>>96358751>Aren't these wars lost not on tactical side but mainly on political side?I don't think so, no.It was just constant wearing down in small tactical victories. Ambush a few vehicles, ambush a few squads, booby trap this, RPG that, shoot down a helicopter.Maintain casualties on the enemy, while minimizing your own, and eventually the enemy will get tired and go home. The Afghans and Vietnamese became the landscape - they knew where and when to expect the intruders, they applied force in the right places, and withdrew to safety. It didn't always work, but they eventually mastered it. The US and Soviets respectively took enough casualties and the wars dragged on long enough that popular support for the wars eroded.
>>96364936I think it's time we admit that certain people have TDSDS. Those who have a deranged obsession with calling everyone who is critical about Trump and any of his policies in a perfectly balanced way 'deranged'.
>>96365237>eventually the enemy will get tired and go home.>took enough casualties and the wars dragged on long enough that popular support for the wars eroded. That was what I meant when I said 'Political Victory'.As far as I know, in most fights, vietnamese and afghans casualties were higher.
>>96356705Thats quite obviously a Warrior. A Bradley would have the dual TOW missile tube on the turret.>>96364493I'm not against tarrifs conceptually, but whacking tarrifs on small and niche consumer goods of relatively low value (hobby miniatures) just pisses off everyone. This isnt a matter of cars or white goods, or industrial machinery/parts/tools and processed commodities. The anons in America arent now going to be incentivised to set up or buy from a nonexistent US company, the companies in GBR are small scale and while this will hurt some of their business-they wont move manufacturing to the US nor do they have the money or market to incentivise doing so, the only exception is maybe GW-however they're no strangers to passing on massively increased prices to consumers, which is exactly what they're going to do. Trump should just sanction the despotic Labour regime and concentrate on China.
>>96358662>Turns out they had something on their side that wasn't just guys, AKs and RPGs.The American public.
>>96365353>As far as I know, in most fights, vietnamese and afghans casualties were higher. It really depends on the specific encounter, but regardless there are enough even battles for things to be very exciting on the tabletop. Every weapon system the US or Soviets deployed has a weakness and can be dealt with. Helicopters can and were shot down, Tanks can and were RPG'd, etc. The terrain, hidden movement, very high morale, and local knowledge and support allowed the sides without the heavy armor and aircraft do pretty well. From what I remember in 'The Other Side of the Mountain', pretty much every battle the Mujahideen described featured more Soviet losses than Afghan. But then in 'The Bear Went Over the Mountain' the Soviets also claimed the enemy had the most losses. I guess each side only framed their victories as teachable moments, ignoring the losses or draws.>That was what I meant when I said 'Political Victory'.Lots of wars are won from 'Political Victories'... look at WW1. Doesn't make them any less interesting to wargame. Unless we're talking about Rhodesia which in which pretty much every battle is one sided as hell, then the Rhodesians are voted out of the government.
>>96361423Change the suffix from .ztb to .zipGoogle is your friend.
>>96366770That's not at all what I was asking. The images are encrypted, not the ztb. Google is your friend.
After some help from the military history buffs please - What dual autocannon could possibly be in the Greek arsenal during the Second World War? Just after a suitable model for this unit, which could either be a single or double barrelled AA gun in Greek service.
>>96365698>Lots of wars are won from 'Political Victories'... look at WW1.I completely disagree on this point.Bulgaria was completely defeated, which led to the fall of Austria-Hungary. Germany therefore found itself in a difficult position, especially since its army was defeated by Allied counteroffensives. The stab in the back is a myth relayed by German nationalist propaganda...On the other hand, it was peace that was lost by the Allies.
>>96365254I think it's time we admit that certain people have TDSDSDS Because his policies are criticized poorly by people who think they know better. If tariffs are so bad then other countries shouldn't use them. Period.inb4 "but he is using muh un-targeted insicrimiante tariffs!!"
>>96367108All countries have tariffs but it's usually to protect some local industry. But with free trade most countries have focused on producing what they're good at and buying what others make cheaper or better. Trump is using tariffs in the dumbest eay possible and anyone that defends him should be euthanized.
>>96367108okay, but you gotta get over it
>>96366814bofors?
>>96364936>it's the Royal Mails fault, because they don't have a "system" in place to deal with the tariffsyou deal with the tariffs moron they're applied by your customs
Anyone know what sort of dates the Victrix Early Saxon kits fit into? Like, at what point would you switch the small shields for the big shields, and at what point would you switch over to the Late Saxon kit?
NOOOO TRAMP YA FACKIN' CUNT!!! I WANT ME BLOODY FIGURINES NOW!!! DROP TEH FACKIN' TARIFFS NOW OR ILL LET YE BLOODY 'AV IT!!!
>>96368461>the worthwhile manufacturers are in the UK or Europe, and have not changed in priceWhat ranges does America actually make, Im curious.
>>96366814The AA Guns that Greece used were 88mm, 37mm (1pdr), or 20mm. No idea exactly what they used though. If I were to guess it would be either the British 1pdr or the Flak37 for the 37mm, and I think the Flak30(Rheinmetall) or Hispano-Suiza or Oerlikon/Becker for the 20mm.
>>96369202The only US mini manufacturer I know of is "Old Glory", they make ok 15/18mm metal minis.
>>96313731Really tight basing, like what Warhammer Fantasy does
>>96369202Not much.
>>96368461Americans once again proving they don't know how tariffs work. Only people in the US are going to have issues with miniatures increasing price, so your image should have an American accent...
>>96344924Battlegroup
>>96369202Wargame Atlantic I think is American, but they talked about having to move manufacturing overseas to Europe where most of their customerbase is
Speaking of WGA and Barons War, does anyone else think that crossbows are a bit overpowered? We tried it out last weekend and my friend ran a group of 7 of them, it was like trying to attack a Napoleonic gunline. They kept pincushioning my footknights, forcing them away, and decimated my spearmen. Closing was suicide but so was staying away. That "rolls of a 10 ignore shields and can only be saved by a 10" rule makes them stupid good in numbers.
>>96369511Europoors don't get a say
>>96367169i am not seething over tariffs here like you
>>96367126So tariffs aren't bad when non Americans use em. Yeah okay europoors gotta pay up since we pay their military bills. Sorry your plastic figgies cost a little more (not sorry)
>>96371316You dumbass, America already had normal tariffs before. Now you have the Trump tarrifs (retard tax) that are making Americans poorer and damaging trade with their allies. I don't order minis from America anyway since the UK is almost exclusively responsible for all mini production and design in the world.
>>96371293>There is only America and Europeamazing education system
>>96368461>trump simp doesn't understand how tariffs workquelle surprisetruly the GWniggers of politics
>>96371316Err, you realise it's the other way around, right? Miniatures are overwhelmingly made in the UK. Americans are the only ones who will be paying more for their miniatures.
