>Stargiven Vigilants

>A macabre tradition, the chapter makes use of personally bonded servo skulls for each battle brother. These devices are referred to as Stargiven Vigilants. The Coal Hearts have long had a tradition of incinerating their sacred dead in the plasma engines of their ships, or rarely by sending them into a star. Before the final dispatch of their remains, a fallen brother’s skull is removed and prepared ritually for service after death. The name and death of the fallen marine is recorded on a golden plate affixed to the Skull’s forehead. Eventually servo skulls are made from these preserved craniums. The machines act as personal scout and support devices for the Astartes, symbolizing legacy and ongoing duty. A Coal Heart is bonded with their Stargiven Vigilant shortly after receiving the black carapace. Occasionally they are donated from the Neophyte’s mentor and who then requests a replacement. Some of the Vigilants been passed down through millenia of service and the oldest are noted for having overactive machine spirits.

>Typically aspirants build and sanctify these servo skulls early in training using provided kits in the chapter’s manufactorums. Successful skulls enter a pool and dispatched at need. Failing twice to properly assemble and bless one leads to removal from aspirancy. Upon construction and consecration, the skulls are stored in the Vault of the Watchful Dead within the Rubblecrown, ensuring a continuous supply of the devices.

>Each Marine personally names their Vigilant during the ritual he receives it, giving it a unique identity reflecting its role or personality. The skulls also retain official names, those of the marine they were extracted from.

Necrons definetly.
Their celestial Orrery is a real time map of the galaxy where every light corresponds to a star. Snuffing out of one of the lights within the Orrery causes the corresponding star to go supernova instantly.
However the necrons don't want to use it because it is extremely hazardeus, but also there is no knowing what kind of effects the ensuing destruction could cause.
Like it could start a massive chainreaction of unintended supernovas of neighboring stars, or cause all sorts of gravitic anomalies which can cause planet orbits to shift or even cause them to tear apart.

>to go supernova instantly
That's what people get wrong:
The passage said "go supernova thousands of years before its time", not "instantly".

For all we know it might 'just' shave off like 1% of a star's lifespan or something so it only works instantly on already old and dying stars, effectively making it a much less scary weapon that's only truly useful as a tool in the hands of timeless people like the necrons, that now have a trivial relation with the passage of time.
>>
>>96425233
It's hilarious how indecisive GW is with the power level of the necrons when they have stuff like this but also don't have a way of traveling between the stars on their own power in newer retcons

>The passage said "go supernova thousands of years before its time", not "instantly".
The star going supernova instantly makes way more sense. Since the whole point about the Orrery is that once you snuff out one of the lights ie. completely remove it, each which corresponds to a star in the galaxy, then it only makes sense that the star that is connected to the light also explodes instantly.

If it was something it where the star takes like 1 million years to explode after they shut off the light it is really stupid when you think about it. Also it'd be absolutely worthless as a weapon against anything since if the whatever civilization is bothering the necron NOW in the present.
Why would the necrons want to wait like 100 000 more years, which also means they need to be fighting for the next 100 000 years, before the star actually wipes the nuisance out?
Yeah, they are immortal and can't die, but at the point why even bother with the Orrery in the first place? Since it is like 99% chance that the civilization just wipes itself out by itself within 100 000 years or necron dynasty itself just absolutely destroys it before the 100 000 years have gone by. Hell, it could be something like a complete 3rd party like orks that come in and then just wipe out the nuisance civilization and then fuck off leaving the necrons alone, or worse case scenario the orks just start fighting the necrons because orks like to fight everyone.

The celestial orrery is quantum entangled with the stars in the galaxy. You CAN destroy a star anywhere in the galaxy by destroying its corresponding light in the Orrery, but it would take an equivalent amount of energy to do so. The Orrery has been banking power for 65 million years and has a reserve enough to be enacted, but only so many times before it is completely depleted and the device itself requires a massive amount of power to maintain lest it destabilize. It is a reserve capability that they will never utilize because it is far more useful for tactical assessment and Intel gathering.
>>
>>96425402
Stop false flagging. The two posters you hate do not type that way.
>>
>>96425394
The orrery wasn't built as a weapon, but a work of art and a tool to "trim" the galactic garden.

If it could wipe out shit instantly it would be the most important thing in the galaxy and fought over by ALL necrons as their main priority, but it's not, it's surely fought over, but say, the silent king would have immediately seized it to instantly extinguish tyranids whenever they get close to a star system.

It just doesn't hold up with the logic of the setting, so a less drastic interpretation of how it works fits far better, but noone wants to consider that because online discourse about factions is always about hyperbolic exaggerations and hyping of stuff.

To be fair, it wouldn't be wrong to say modern humans are capable of some incredible things that you wouldn't really think are at our tech level. For example, the type of technology that allows us to create element 118 is rare, expensive and not practical but it still exists. So really almost anything up to and including dark eldar super weapons is on the table it would just be rare and represent the cutting edge of what humans were capable of at the height of our power. Which tracks with the fluff that shows us being at least competitive with the Eldar but the most advanced thing we got left behind is STLs for knights and titans and spaceships. Considering the Imperium itself is capable of some truly crazy levels of destruction when it dips into its archeotech I think felating DAOT humanity is plenty fine. It's also in line with the settings theme of decay. DAOT humans have to be stronger than the Imperium for humanity to have fallen from their pinnacle, and we have precedent in young races becoming powerful really quickly with the Tau.

Also the truth is that humanity during the DAoT must've been at least on par with something like the eldar or they would've been wiped out pretty easily. I say this because the Eldar empire viewed the galaxy more or less like the Imperium views it now, ie. everything is ours and we will blast you fuckers back to the Hadean era if we want to.
>>
>>96425527
>shows us being at least competitive with the Eldar
there's no indication that the eldar empire was actively inimical to men in their golden age, for all we know man prospered because the eldar didn't care about them and were content with just their own corner of paradise instead of being extremely expansionist and territorial of their galaxy.

>>
>>96425572
The path books make it pretty clear the Eldar did not in fact view the galaxy that way. They stuck to their core homeworlds in untouchable ivory towers and did nothing to finish exterminating the necrons, suppress younger alien civilizations or curtail the orks. They would crush anyone who opposed them, but did also were aloof and did not concern themselves with the health of the galaxy at large. It was the craftworlders who actually explored the galaxy and traded and interacted with aliens.
>>
>>96425572
>I say this because the Eldar empire viewed the galaxy more or less like the Imperium views it now

>>
>>96425587
Eldar empire was already deep into the degeneracy of the pleasure cults when humanity was only getting to the stars. Nevermind the DAoT when the eldar empire was in it deep.
Thinking that the pleasure cults, basically proto-dark eldar, would leave humanity alone and not kidnap new slaves to torture, rape and sacrifice to bring forth Slaanesh back then is really weird.

I think the only two times Eldar Empire tech has really been Valedor with the Fireheart and the White Dwarf story World of the Bloody Sword which mentions the Akliamor.
The Fireheart required psychic activation which made it useless for Dark Eldar, but the Akliamor is more vague in that the Eldar abandoned them for how destructive they were.
Narurally the Fireheart blew up a planet and destroyed everything aroudn it, while the Akliamor being activated and pointed at themselves immediately glassed the planet they were hidden on.

Magnus didn't feel it, in fact. And neither will Horus.
>+**Two rebel angels. His axe falls on those deserving its smile.**+
By that logic no primarch deserves its smile.

A baker that bakes no bread is a failure of a baker. A builder that builds no building is a failure of a builder.
Leman Russ is an "executioner" that executed no primarchs. He fought quite a number of them, but he won against none of them and killed as much.

He is a failure.

At the climax of the greatest civil war the hobby had ever known, Duncan and Cruddace faced one another aboard the flagship of the traitor Gamemaster. The battle outside raged with unimaginable fury, but it was here, in this final duel, that the fate of all humanity would be decided.

Cruddace, swollen with the power of the Ruinous Powers, was no longer the man Duncan had once loved like a son. His strength was terrifying, his will sharpened into a weapon by the Dark Gods themselves. Again and again, Cruddace struck, and Duncan, though the mightiest of mankind, was battered and broken beneath the blows.

The Master of Mankind faltered. He could not bring himself, at first, to destroy what Cruddace had become, still seeing the noble champion who had once carried the banner of unity across the hobby. In that moment of hesitation, Cruddace struck Duncan down with a mortal wound.

But as Duncan lay bleeding, his spirit aflame with psychic light, he saw through the mask of his fallen co-worker. He beheld the truth — that nothing of Cruddace’s old self remained. The Gamemaster was gone, replaced only by a monstrous pawn of Chaos. In that final moment of clarity, Duncan unleashed the full force of his power.

The throne room was consumed in light as Duncan obliterated Cruddace, body and soul, scouring even the Dark Gods’ hold upon him. The blow shattered Duncan as well, burning away his mortal shell and leaving him crippled beyond recovery.

But humanity was saved. The traitor was no more, and Duncan, broken and bound to the Red Throne, would paint on YouTube for ten thousand years — the price of his final victory over Cruddace.

No, Alpharius has always been a loyalist since he was raised in the Palace as the actual first primarch found in secret. He may be Cypher in 40k, lot's of clues point to that.

But at one point during the HH, he and Omegon switched places, unknow to even their legionaries. So the Alpharius killed by Dorn awas actually the original Omegon, the twin found with armour and a necron-like spear.

The Corsair book plot leaked.
The protag and an eldar Admiral who recently turned Corsair are sent by a Corsair Princess to infiltrate a Freebooter ship and assassinate the Kaptin in order to cause a mutiny among the crew. They have a full Corsair squad with them but the only noteworthy one is the Shade Runner.
The protag and his admiral stooge just sort of bumble around and get into situations with the Orks as they blindly stumble around the ship looking for the Kaptin, with members of their squad getting picked off in fights over time.
The Shade Runner is a 'quirky' girlboss who pretty much takes the lead early on and frequently has to save the protag and the admiral. When the protag finally duels the Kaptin he gets knocked down just for ths Shade Runner to teleport in and save the day.
The big 'twst' is that the Ork mutiny never happens, and the Freebooterz instead immediately gun down all of the Corsairs except the protag, the admiral, and the Shade Runner as they all run to escape. The Kaprin's first mate immediately takes up command of the ship and links up with the rest of the Freebooter fleet as the Corsair trio escapes.
When they return to the Corsair Princess she's furious and almost has the protag executed, but considers it to not be worth the time with the Feeebooterz approaching. She instead demotes the protag and throws the admiral in the brig before going to prepare for battle. The protag is scared shitless because the Freebooter fleet is massive, so he and his boyfriend go spring the admiral out and try to make their escape. The Shade Runner finds them but decides to go with them, bringing in a small crew that also wants to get out before the Orks show up.
The group mamages to hop in a ship right as the space battle breaks out, and they make their escape into the webway as the rest of the Corsairs seem to be blasted apart.
The ending twist is that the Corsair Princess managed to escape as well with her flagship, and she plots to hunt them down.

Okay I think I finally got the posing right where I want it. Stab through the eye, misfiring plasma just scorching the cape as a near miss.

Now I can take all this apart and start cleaning mold lines for when the real bits come - Gonna strip the Captain's head and backpack, use 5mm clear acrylic rods for a single good flight stem (Drilling below the base and anchoring with greenstuff for stability since I've got to angle it a bit), and do what I can for exit wounds. Gotta do a tiny bit of greenstuff for the speartip and try to get it to anchor into the eyehole I drilled.
Then I just need to plan what I'm doing for the base decoration and I can finally start painting in early september.

Hey guys, hope you're all having a nice friday.
The last weekend of august is here and we're fast approaching the deadline. Best of luck to those of you still hard at work on your character, I know you can do it. If you've finished your character model you can submit it here by replying to my post. As always I'll look through the archive too but this is the best way to not get missed. Deadline is midnight the 31st est.
Here is the vote for next month's collage:
https://strawpoll.com/kogjRWDxqg6
There has been some complaints and suggestions about the september vote. Kitbashed character is in the lead to win and some are feeling that it's too close to the current theme and that it should be vetoed for the runner up. I don't like to take decisions like this since I feel the decision should be with the thread but I think I've found a solution that works. I'll change the "kitbashed character" option to a more open kitbash theme where you can submit anything kitbashed. That way the people who wanted to kitbash a character can still do so while those wanting something more fresh also get their way. Feel free to share your thoughts on this, thanks guys.
>>
>>96426962
GW is being very weird and retarded.
Since ~2016 we got
- First founding primaris upgrades (~6 + 3 pads, 3 heads, 2 arms and some gubbins). All released at the same time
- BT upgrade sprue
- new DA upgrade sprue
- new BA upgrade sprue
And I think that's it.
I could add the Cadian upgrade sprue to the list because it's the same formula.

All of that is the last decade.
There is no rhyme or logic, SW didn't get one, could argue that their unique units count as such, but it doesn't cover all of what the upgrade packs offered.

In the end we all know that GW could do more but choose not to, my understanding is that it's just product planning; they plan a product and it comes out and there isn't like a list with boxes to check if a faction/subfaction is complete or not.

>>96426943

To be fair, it's not uncommon for many vehicle owners to not paint underneath their vehicles. The argument is usually that it's difficult to reach and most importantly, no one sees it.
The Saddam Hussein hiding place under the rogal dorn is seen by them as an advantage, not a negative.

Moreover, they can hide their loaded dice in it when they want to introduce it into the game without their opponent noticing.

Thought and belief are reflected into the Warp.
Due to the broad nature of the Chaos Gods and the dominion they have over the Warp, most belief is funneled into them and empowers them.
As such, any kind of belief, even in the Emperor, would be empowering Chaos.
He also (rightfully) believed that religion would lead a civilization as large as the Imperium ruination, as they would just end up feeding Chaos more while internal differences would lead to fracturing.

The general idea was that he should be perceived as a first among men and he aimed to quell all kinds of worship in general and wanted a reign of logic and such, all to reduce the power of the gods, who feed most and best when they are the recipients of ritual adoration.
It was all in vain, but the idea was there.

It's because Big E slept through the part in history where secular humanist movements all inherently became super religious institutions with lotsa infighting and rigid beliefs. Not enough people talk about how much secular humanism has doomed mankind after the 19th century and how that's reflected pretty strongly in the Emperor's beliefs specially in that one The Last Church On Terra book. Literally it's why the Imperial Fists (partially) became such zealots after a bit
>>
>>96427572
Lmao the guy who wrote the last church had a copy get signed by Richard Dawkins, that was an earnest "I have depicted me as the emperor and you as religion man".
>>
>>96427572
People also tend to ignore the part where Emps lived through DAoT, ie. through humanity's Golden Age. A time when humanity had left religion and superstition behind from what we understand.
So in his eyes, he had seen humanity do it once, meaning it can do it again. Emperor's problem however was that he was trying to do it too fast, also chaos entities which intentionally worked against his plans didn't help either obviously.

The Emperor is said to have been multiple man throught history, many times appearing as a prophet...
The headcanon? He is every single prophet, yup all of them
He's Moses seeing all the jews become despotic life hating dipshits
He's Huatzipoctli seeing people murder each other im his name
He's Buddha seeing indians turning to shitting in the streets
Big E is Jesus himself and he saw the church get corrupt and also the (disgusting!) protestant reformation happen before his very eyes and became very depressed after it. It's why things in the imperium have latin and catholic names like who the fuck would know what the hell an inquisition is by the 41st millenium if not a perpetual

That said there probably are democracies in the imperium and they probably empower Tzeentch because of yk scheming and electoral needs and such, but any form of government would inherently power Tzeentch be it democracy, space feudalism, space fascism, space communism and so on. Yeah, well technically it's before highlights. I use a heavily thinned 1:1 mix of black and purple. Regular paints though, that's why recesses end up so nicely dark. I airbrush turquoise so I paint yellow over that. not nearly as bad as over black.

The problem is I"ve got about 100 Guard I need to replace (technically 95 at this point) so I can salvage the heads from the older models, transplant them on to the newer models, and then use the older bodies as part of terrain pieces (monuments/statuary guardens, etc.)
I know the ranger hoods are SUPER common as conversions but I like them.

All the fluo paints I've tried from multiple brands are very weird to work with. So far my favorite is ak fluo. All of them across all the brands are very gloopy, and have pretty bad coverage over anything besides white(which is a good thing in some applications)

How do I make a Death Guard list that isn't toxic or waac?

There's are few inherently 'bad' units in the army. Ok, maybe some units are more cheese than others (LoC with Deathshrouds, Terminator Bricks, Plagueburst crawler spam) but almost everything in the army, if played in a not shit way, could be considered 'waac'.

If you can't justify clankers being a race, your "lateral application" is flawed; thus, the unamused anime images. If a bucket of bolts "cares" it's being called a clanker, it's an OSHA hazard even the mechanicum doesn't want to deal with.

Yrliet is a colossal autist by Eldar standards. The first Farseer you meet is legitimately happy to dump her onto you, and had already been trying to get her killed before you came along.
Romancing Yrliet is the equivalent of flirting with the drama club outcast who cuts herself because her parents work late but calls herself otherkin for attention. There's five different layers of things wrong with her, and being an Eldar is the least of them.
