Terrain building is fun but it's a hobby all on it's own. It combines perfectly with playing games but it's not required. That being said, nothing kills my enthusiasm for playing a game more then seeing flat 2d terrain mats or random nick nacks as terrain.

I'm gonna do something stupid and engage meaningfully and say that no one owns a house anymore, no one has room for this shit. I've gotten into terrain making but living in an apartment means you have no room you can just be messy in, and anything you make has to stay. Half the shit you work with needs to be ventilated. You need a garage or a workshop where it doesn't matter what you spill and you can open the whole place up if you need to.No big shock nobody is making a scale replica of minas tirith in their two room apartment.

It generally sucks. Your logic is faulty - if you're playing with different teams, characters, factions, whatever - it's already not a symmetrical game, so the symmetrical terrain will reward one team and punish the other. You gotta go full asymetrical, that way the quirks and oddities have a chance of cancelling each other out and you can have an actual fun game.
