The good, bad and ugly on this?

I don't like rolling too many random things to create a character.

Frontier Space is a newer game that functions as an across the board improvement for this kind of d100 sci-fi game.

Yeah? I'll have to check that out. I have fond memories of SF but I think I'd like an update

>Frontier Space
I want to call it baby's first scifi rpg, which would be an awful shame as it came from the same guy who was for years supporting Star Frontiers with the StarFontiersman magazine, but it's not as bad as that.
I wouldn't call it an across the board improvement though. The simplified character creation is a matter of taste and the game play as well is far less tactical in combat. It's not super lite but it is a lite system and that is also a matter of taste as to whether it's an improvement. While people are often going to make their own settings, the races in Frontier Space are less interesting than in Star Frontiers and overall the lore of FS is less than in SF.

I think the worst thing is just how much characters are one trick ponies. If you become a weapons guy, that's it, you basically can't get any good level skills in the psychosocial or tech skill areas because you've chosen the cheapest PSA (primary skill area) and other-PSA skills just become too expensive. Similar for the others. In class based systems you don't have the illusion that maybe you could be a fighter who picks up some healing (multiclass and D&D paladins aside) but SF dangles that in front of you saying
>if you never advance in military again maybe you could learn to hack a computer or tend a wound
The computer stuff is dated. Like needing a near maximum level computer to control robots or something.
Although Knight Hawks integrates with the original game/Alpha Dawn, good luck ever getting a character to earn enough experience to buy those spaceship skills. If you're going to be ground based then became spaceship operators you should probably either homebrew rules to let you buy spaceship skills more cheaply or make new characters.

If all that puts you off, it puts me off and I like SF, Frontier Explorer magazine #23 has a fanmade SF to FS race conversion that helps make the FS setting more like SF
