I realized my GMing style is 90's children television.I run a lot of open tables, at least once a week, and players come back even when they have other options so I'm clearly not the worst possible GM. But I was after a more combat heavy than usual session I realized I treat my players like 3 year olds I have to keep on a leash. I do hate seeing people not say anything for 10 minutes but it's not something I do for them, my instinct is complimenting whatever after a couple minutes and jumping to the next thing. I reiterate information like crazy, up to describing the state of the scenario between each turn, I prompt obvious questions just to get them speaking, I like party splits in social situations because that means I can cut to some other place whenever something starts dragging. If it was on a screen it'd be that weird MTv meets Nickelodeon 90's kids tv energy. And again, players keep comming back and I do this for myself, I sometimes go for a slower tempo at the start but after an hour every game I run could be shot with a wide lense camera on the floor and people crouching to speak to it. Should I take efforts to fix this? Is it fine to just have a way you run things and be the dude that does things a certain way or is it pathetic to get stuck in a style you didn't chose? Do players like having a variety of options or are they looking for their one true GM to play with forever? Am I being neurotic for the most retarded thing ever?
>>96430000Que cosa posteas.
>>96430006I though it was a funny pic of dogs fucking in front of a police line, I didn't notice it had spanish text. Please don't bully me.
>>96430000>Am I being neurotic for the most retarded thing ever?If people are enjoying what you're putting out, yes. It is good to have introspection and self reflection, but don't fall into the trap of impostor syndrome.
>>96430000>Should I take efforts to fix this? No.>Is it fine to just have a way you run things and be the dude that does things a certain wayYes.>Do players like having a variety of options or are they looking for their one true GM to play with forever? Maybe.>Am I being neurotic for the most retarded thing ever?Fuck yeah.Look, there's something to be said for challenging yourself and trying to improve but if you've found a style of play that you enjoy and your players seem to be enjoying it too then I wouldn't stress.
>>96430000>Should I take efforts to fix this? Are players having fun? Are you having fun?> Is it fine to just have a way you run things and be the dude that does things a certain way It's GOOD to be a GM who people can trust to run a certain style well. There's a guy I know that we call Vampire Mike because he's been running long slow-burner political drama WoD games since VtM was the new hotness. It's not always WoD, but it's always that style. If you sit down at his table you know what you're getting.>or is it pathetic to get stuck in a style you didn't chose? Not pathetic. We don't choose a lot of things, we just find that's how we are. Human brains are messy, sloppy things that don't follow orders. Your brain will lie to you, tell you that it's logical and follows rules, but actually it's not - you just believe its lies because it IS your internal voice.Don't sweat it. Run what you run. Take players who like what you run. Enjoy the fact that people like your games.>nice digits btw

>>96430000there is no one right way to GMthere are many wrong ways to GMyou are NOT doing it wrong
>>96430000>Should I take efforts to fix this? Why?>Is it fine to just have a way you run things and be the dude that does things a certain wayYes.>is it pathetic to get stuck in a style you didn't chose?Depends. It boils down to whether you like the result. If so, treat it as a nice surprise and fuck the control freaks telling you that you must plan all things in your life.>Do players like having a variety of options or are they looking for their one true GM to play with forever?Yes. It depends a lot on the player.>Am I being neurotic for the most retarded thing ever?Yes, you worry too much.
>>96430000Only advice i can give quads like that is lean into it. If you run games like a 90s kids show, ham up the villains and encounters like one too.
>>96430000Shit, dose digits. FUCK (in front of) DA POLEEECE!!!
>>96430000How long are your sessions, usually, and what do you run? I kind of want to run open tables but I'm guessing that'd mean short adventures that can reach a conclusion by the end, or something like a megadungeon that can be explored without being hampered by people dropping in and out.
>>96430000Upgrade to 2000s television
>>96430000That genuinely sounds like the best possible GM attitude to have for a open table that is likely a bunch of beginners who appreciate the kid gloves.Plus no GM really chooses their style. They just have a natural way of doing things that they have to either embrace or work around.
>>96430000>I realized I treat my players like 3 year olds I have to keep on a leash. Most playoids really are kids in adult bodies. I can't tell you have many times I've had a 30 year old adult man/woman acting cranky for no apparent reason and then I hear their stomach gurgle so I call a quick break to put some snacks out and suddenly they're happy again. Or how they don't know what they want(requesting a sandbox and then getting really listless and refusing to go explore). If you Google for advice on classroom management it really does resemble being a GM. It's all on point. Getting them to spitball ideas to jog their creativity. Socratic teaching techniques. Reverse psychology.
