I first paint the base cloth fully. Then you draw the basic shapes and add highlights, after which you finally shade it all together with a mix of purple and black, very thin.

Tariffs are into the US unless your country has retaliatory tariffs AND that seller is charging you for them.

A lot of non-US people have been eating the tariff costs to maintain business in the US but with the latest change many are no longer willing to. Hell, like 20 companies no longer ship postal to the US now

Not bad anon, better than my first for sure. Stick with it. You should check out Vince venturella on YouTube, he has a series called hobby cheating and it elevated my painting dramatically in a matter of a single day. A lot of people don't like Vince for various reasons but I don't really give a shit about any of that, personally. The problem is not with a tariff, as I'd suspect your country probably already charges some equivalent of import duty on things from other countries, but rather that your country might be suspending mail service from the US altogether right now - I know France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, and the UK are doing this, and there are doubtless several others represented here at WIP.

Can I get some advice here WIP?
I've come across Turbo Dork Metallic paints and I plan on getting the black ice (black metallic), pearly gates (white metallic) and sparkle motion seems to be an "ivory metallic."
I remember a while ago reading somewhere that ivory paint can be better than white sometimes to brighten the color of a paint. Would this apply the same for an ivory metallic brightening up a metallic paint?
I already have a metallic medium for turning colored paints into colored metallic paints.
>>
>>96437432
I would love to give you an answer, but you might have to experiment on this one. The ivory is probably more about it being not an awful white pigment and desaturating less, which I'm not sure matters as much with metallics, but I'm not sure on that one.
>>
>>96437506
Fair enough. I just wanted clarification if the ivory to lighten coloured rule applies to metallic paints as well.

Evening lads, just wanna check I’ve got this correct before I glue - I’m new to this.

I’m building 5x black Templar initiates
2x will hold a power fist
3x will hold a chain sword
5x will hold a heavy bolt pistol in their off hand
All 5x have a close combat weapon glued to their leg
All 5x have a standard bolt pistol glued to their leg

Is this correct it just seems odd and when I try to adjust the weapons in the 40K app it only says good to go if all 5 initiates have all of those weapons…

Appreciate any insight anyone has
>>
>>96438236
You're talking about army or squad building. I think this would be better asked in /40kg/. Just know that it is a mess down there.

Do you have a list of paints to paint those Black Templars? I don't have the link, but I think someone can link you Stahly's paint PDF so you can find close enough approximates if you like to avoid Citadel paints.
>>
>>96438248
I don’t have a list but I watched that really popular YouTube painting tutorial guy, made a list of every brush and paint. Ordered those and I’ll follow along.
Just gonna practice his method over and over again one model at a time.

I also bought the warsuit so I’ll paint that at some point.

I just don’t wanna go and glue and find out my marines have too many weapons, seems odd the model would hold a heavy bolt pistol and also have a standard one on its hip. Kinda confused.

you don't need the extra pistol and cc weapon on them, it's kind of weird that they still have them in the profile and those templars have their main weapons chained to their hands so they can't holster and draw secondaries anyway. no one will complain if you leave stuff like that off for aesthetics.

Sorry if this is retarded but could you use metallics with an eye towards going nmm? Here is my thought process
>drybrush on a rough blend from your shadow color to your darkest metallic
>highlight your next brighter metallic
>you now have a passable mini for using on the tabletop
>later you can go back, and continue adding highlights and blends with metallics until you hit white
>add a matte glaze overtop to kill the glitter of the true metallic
This would let you get minis looking alright on the tabletop sooner and metallics tend to blend a lot quicker and easier than other paints.

The retarded assumption you've made is that a scruffy nmm approach is going to somehow look better than shaded true metallics. If you want to do nmm just block in the proper light, dark and mid for your passable tabletop model.

Yeah that makes sense, the app just takes into consideration the bolt rifle replaced by the heavy pistol and the chainsword, and still keeps the knife and bolt pistol as the baseline marine equipment although they will never be shown nor used.

They can fire both pistols at once. Its weird they haven't changed it in-line with basically every other chainsword marine (like the templar sword brethren) but it's a valid loadout with in-game effects.

I always send pictures to myself in Discord and crop and post from my PC.
I'm curious about what caused what looks like texture. It doesn't look like your paint was too thick, so I'm guessing a poor prime. But it's hard to tell. Definitely add highlights tho. Since it's pure black you could highlight most of it in a dark grey, then go light grey for the extremes.

I'd look into maybe giving the shadows a bit more depth, ex on the mace head and between different areas like the tassets and the cloth

>>96440590
You picked a pretty simple mini which I think is good for some practice after a break this long. Everything is "in lines" as far as I can see and that's always nice. I can't tell how much of the shading you actually painted and how much is because of the lighting though. Overally a decent start, keep at it!
>>96440634
If this is really your first mini that is unironically very impressive. It takes people a while to even try to attempt blends(even if it's done with contrast-like paints) and you got it pretty damn clean right off the bat. Same with the eye glow, more experienced people can struggle with that and yours looks good. The verdigris is a nice touch too. Great job, honestly.

This is the plasticard I just got in the mail for making tiled based. This shit is extremely hard to cut. My hobby knife will only make superficial cuts and I'd never get through it all the way. I had to use tin cutters to be able to get through it easily. Even a pair of wire cutters didn't cut all the way through.
How am I supposed to use this when I need heavy equipment to even cut out the piece I need? I have no idea how I'm going to be able to carve in the grooves for the tile look.
>>
>>96441886
1.5 is pretty thicc.
That said, if you don't have any dedicated equipment (like DSPIAE cutter), you should be cutting plasticard by using (ideally metal) ruler and then doing multiple shallow cuts on the same spot. It usually takes ~three cuts before you can just snap it cleanly away.
>>
>>96441923
I had thought about getting the 1mm, but after seeing how hard it is to cut with just a hobby knife I'm wishing I went with 0.5mm.
I suppose to make the gouges I can use my hand saw I just got. Making this one base did just get way more annoying than I thought it would be.
>>
Is 0.38mm needle size a good needle size for basecoats and detail work if I just switch the air cap to a wider one?
Or if I just want to use an airbrush for basecoats it is just 0.5mm all the way?

that's not how cutting platicard works

you score the line a few times depending on thickness and you bend it until it snaps, non straight cuts are harder buy doable by chunks in the same manner, for smaller random shapes you can use a jeweler style saw
>https://youtu.be/HMxHTeIGD84?feature=shared&t=33

also abs is not 'polystyrene' and might not break as cleanly, that product description is lying to you, i'm pretty sure abs is cheaper and that's why they sell a lot of sheets of that for hobbying now and try to gaslight you

however if you want the thickness to make slabs or something like that look for 'foamed pvc' sheets, those are soft enough to be cut A LOT more easily and you can imprint textures on it by just pressing on it or scraping to make wood grain, picrel is mostly that

Nah anon, you just need a sharp/fresh hobby knife and a (metal) ruler. It's easy to cut plasticard, even 1.5mm (and thicker), but it needs a little bit of patience. I do it regularly.
You can check Offbeat Builds on youtube, he does some pretty magical things with plasticard and shows most of the important parts of the process.
That said, if you wanted to use plasticard as some kind of cobblestone or something similar, it might be easier to cut it into smaller pieces and then layer it, rather than carving.

Thank you!
>>
>>96441509
The color is fine, but I think you're lacking definition and shading on it.

>>96441123
Nice. The skin and base look good. You could always differentiate the scales a little by making them a bit darker or a deeper shade of blue. also the bone spines on the wings, the big ones at least you should probably blend the ivory brown into each other with the sharp lines (idk how to describe it properly but you know what I mean), or just the way you did it on his horns.

>>96440634
Nice start. some basic improvements, I would say add some edge highlights (not full outlining everything, but little bits of untarnished bronze dotted around any angular shapes on the armor and here and there, and on the rivets. Stuff like that.
I see what you were going for with the 'dark red into red' look for the red, but it looks a little strange on the plume of the helmet,, The top of the plume where it bends over should really be a little bit brighter, some of the brighter red just highlighted along the hairs only right on the top of that bend, and then maybe an even brighter red just on the upward bending parts closer to the tips if you want to keep that gradient well defined.
I would also put a a brighter dot of very pale pastel green right in the middle of your glowy areas.
Oh, also the belt buckle isn't painted.
It's pretty good though.

Thanks anons. I might look into that softer stuff if I plan on doing more bases like this.
I ended up making due with my hobby saw that I'm now really glad I recently bought. Drew straight lines with a micron pen, scored it with my knife, and then dragged the saw across 7 times for each line. I got it mostly to size and shape with the base, but it's good enough. I can't be fucked sanding it down to flush. At least not today.
I'm gonna make a blood splash out of the cup with some resin too. Now I just need to decide what material to make the floor tiles. Not Marble.

>>96442615
Looking good. Btw anon, you can soften the plasticard with plastic cement and stipple a nice texture onto it with something like an old stiff brush. This technique is especially great for coarse things, like cast iron/steel or stone. Stipple the texture, then sand it very gently to make it look more natural and it does absolute wonders when painted.
>>
>>96442732
I tested my glue on a piece just to make sure it was even the material as advertised. I though I was gonna have to soften it and then cut it for a minute. But that texture method sounds interesting. I'll try that if I want to go for a more worn or natural material.
I managed to grout the tiles with some thinned vallejo texture paste. That really fine sand worked better than I thought it would desu. Now I just need to decide if there's anything I want to put in front of where she'll be standing or leave it as is before I go prime it.

First time posting here, I’ve always enjoyed checking out your works anons.
I'm at my 4th mini, tried some stuff and learned a lot.
I rushed my white and didn’t thin my paint enough and got fucked later on.
Also fucked up my white while trying to practice OSL for the first time, so there is a lot of white particles around some parts...
Anyway, I will do better next time.
>>
>>96442767

>it was even the material as advertised
plastic cement works on abs too, maybe not as easily but it does
it won't work for the pvc tho

also from experience, unless you want them to look brand new or like inside flooring, tiles look better if you make each tile individually and glue them together later, the uneveness gives them character, also its easier to wear and tear them that way
>>
>>96442866
In this instance it's supposed to be a fairly wept kept vampire's castle, so this is what I was going for. If I need to cut out individual tiles I'll have to bust out the tin snips again kek
>>
why do paint makers just suck at making charts? what kind of benefit do they have from not advertising the correct color?
>>
>>96443492
You can't realistically advertise the accurate color so there's no point in bothering.

Yeah, you usually want the focus to stay on the model itself and use the base as a supporting feature.

Is there a reason why you would not submit them all?
As far as the quality of the paintjob goes I would say the Chosen show off your skill the most due to their slight theme variation and various details. But also, and this is not your fault, the models are cluttered with shit, generally bad and a bit hard to look at and won't pop well. The same is true with the posessed. This is why you should go with the Terminators. They are far more readable and will be easily seen by both the judges and the audience.

Is the ashen skin with white armour a misguided choice?

I need to glaze some more color back into the skin but I’m starting to worry it won’t be enough contrast.
>>
>>96446941
You'll have to add a lot of shading in the skin to make it stand out. I actually couldn't tell there was armor for a minute and though it was naked.Maybe it you add a bit of grey to the skin to make it look more like Kratos' skin and glaze some red/purple into the shadows it could help.

Appreciate it, I think yours is coming together really nicely.

I like the contrast of the silver weathering with the matte black, it's something I always wanted to do but since all my guys have the same semi gloss finish I'm sticking with that, but I think matte can give a much grittier (in a good way) look.

In fact if you want some better inspo there's a painter that does weathered, matte black templars which are probably much better than mine- check out boo's builds on ig, his OSL game especially is awesome and makes me wish I wasn't so stubborn in not getting an airbrush.

Here's the cousin of your swordbro anyway.

>>96445282

some people here use steel boxes, boxes with steel plates or IKEA KVISSLE/HARVMATTA and put magnets on the bases of the dudes

you can also use generic foam suitcases like this

or this
>https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Tools-Funda-r%C3%ADgida-impermeable-almacenamiento/dp/B0CKFHH599

those are just first result examples but you get the idea, you can also buy just the pluckable foam and put in whichever box or drawer you want

Until you get enough minis, you could store them inside tupperwares with foam or bubblewrap, it will be enough for a while.

Had to do a fumigation for bed bugs because my next door neighbor is literally the infamous chris-chan tier hoarder of the building, but i forgot a half-painted daemon prince on my hobby desk, how fucked by the leftover chemical film is it? Do I have to strip and prime again?
>>
>>96448301
If I recall correctly, everything left open after beg bugs chemical treatment have to be washed in warm water and soap to get rid of residual stuff. Maybe just warm water will be enough?

Also, for the future, because I had to deal with bed bugs myself - chemical solutions are no longer favoured since these little fuckers gain resistance absurdly quickly so you need to repeat it with at least three different stuff to be sure. Now, most popular and safest option is to use just hot steam - it was proven (I even have scientific article about it) that temperature over around 50C kills both living bugs and their eggs and even casual steam cleaner device penetrate beds, carpets and the like with ease. Just a friendly tip.

i kind of always go for a zen prime just because I have the airbrush at hand but don't always take advantage of it. in this case i had a can of hyrax brown i used as the base (i actually used this on the first of the kabalites i painted (the modern one)) and it seems to work pretty nicely as a base for a red ink sprayed onto the zen shading (i used some monument bright ivory as my airbrush white has been coming out a bit spotty)
